A few weeks back at Sugarloaf in the newish brackett basin (which is all tree skiing with plenty of disclaimers at the entrance) i got stuck behind a couple saying "i think this is all trees" so of course the other responded " i wonder if any of this is groomed."

From today 15-17" of heavy pow at stevens

Random guy: "Daniel the key is to point em downhill. Daniel youre pointing them uphill. Why are you pointing them uphill again?"

lifty with brush in his hand: " You might want to brush that snow off before you sit down."

Guy in ski lodge: " Yeah been working real hard today...brought the snowblades. Tired even thought ive got 50 days under my belt."

Riding up Summit chair at Alpine Meadows on a bluebird powder sunday at 1 PM (parking lot completely full)--"We just got here. Can you tell us where we can find fresh tracks?"

Overheard at the Red Heather warming hut from one of a group of skiers covered head to toe in snow, who had clearly been out having a blast in the huge dump of fresh powder: "So, how does this thing work? What do I have to do if I'm looking for someone?" The beacon he was holding out was switched off.

From another forum, may or may not be a gaper quote but amusing nonetheless.

Overheard on a lift the end of last week in Val d'Isere. Mother consoling her crying child:

"I'm sorry Lydia, but because of the storm that the weather man says is coming we won't be able to get the helicopter to Geneva airport and we'll just have to get a taxi there. Mummy and Daddy aren't happy too but we're not crying, are we ?"

    Awwww, that's just too precious.

I don't know which of these to post. 1) the guy standing crosswise in the narrow choke of a steep icy chute--making phone calls or 2) the guy going 60 with his loaded ski rack open, or 3) the jerk behind me who got pissed off when I honked over guy #2 to tell him (skis through the windshield can really ruin your day.) How about all of them?

Not really a gaper since this kid rips, but he has a good sense of humor for a 7 year-old.

Seriously just heard a coworker (guy's in his 70s with a super nasal voice) talking on the phone: "Yeah, I'm going skiing down at Hood this weekend... well, it's higher down there so they can stay open all year round. And they have this new thing called "freeski" or something....yeah, I don't think I'm in for that."

Not as good as some in here, but it had me in silent giggles.

I don't know if this counts as a gaper quote since I live a couple hundred miles from the nearest ski area. But:

Neighbor to me just now: "Why are you ironing your skis in the driveway?"
And of course the question following my explanation was "You mean there's still snow?"

About 3/4 of the way up to Camp Muir on Rainier:
*points to beacon* "What is that?"

My gaper quote about 2 hours later at camp Muir looking south:
"are there any volcanoes between hood and Shasta?" herp derp

You'd be amazed how often I get that question. Especially when you can SEE the mountains from here. The Beartooths and even the runs at Red Lodge are easy to see from town. Ummmmm. Do people not look outside their windows? Lol.

Hmm. Guy's in his 70's, skiing in May, probably started skiing before your father was born. Gaper?

Nah, dude just started skiing a few years ago. (He's probably 60s, not 70s.) Guess you'd have to meet him. I won't go into details, but he is a gaper through and through. I'm not one to make fun of the old guard - I'd love to make some turns with him if he started skiing before my dad. Anyway, sorry for the thread derail. Probably wasn't worth posting originally, but it was funny as shit to me at the time.

Scott~, thanks for posting those. That day was epic in so many ways. The snowblades quote was just icing on the cake at that point.

After smoking 3 joints of AK's finest with only 3 people I turn to a local and ask "what elevation is Juneau?".
