RIP. Interesting it's a year to the day since Brad Washburn passed on. Both very impressive human beings. Both went far too young.

Shut your eyes and think of somewhere. Somewhere cold and caked with snow.

"You don't have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things — to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals. The intense effort, the giving of everything you've got, is a very pleasant bonus." said Sir Ed

He certainly was a legend.
When I was 13 I remember eating at this small pub in Wales. (Don't remember the name) Across the street was this hotel where supposedly the whole expedition was planned. Back then I didn't think much of it but now after seeing what Hillary did it was pretty damn cool.
Anyways.. RIP Sir Edmund Hillary

My favorate quote from him was when somebody asked him why there was no photo of him on the summit and only one of Tenzing Norgay.
"As far as I knew, he had never taken a photograph before, and the summit of Everest was hardly the place to show him how."
RIP

one of the few and I'm sure proud old climbers to have made it as long as they did, 88's pretty impressive.
no less impressive then what they accomplished with what they had as mentioned before. It's funny to think what a tourist attraction everest has become. It wasn't like that back then.

I heard a story awhile back, it could all just be internet heresy but it fits his character.
For years, neither him nor Norgay would say who actually stepped onto the summit first as they wanted to share the accomplishment. Eventually, Hillary admitted that he said to Norgay just short of the summit 'It's your country, you go first'. Class act all the way.
