Hey you worker bees that frequent the board and post here...(NSR)

I just started a new job. Yesterday was my first day. They plugged in my new computer today, and already I've posted a few times.

Now, having my own semi-private cubicle and my own 'puter hooked up to the internet is pretty new to me. I don't know how much they can find out about my (ab)use of a T1 connection. Obviously, I know not to click on the "NSFW" links and such. I;m pretty autonomous, so I can't really ask around to anyone. What I'm wondering is what are the risks of browsing in general this early in the game. I figure the risks are low because the company is smallish (the IT guy is mostly an engineer here at the main office, not strictly an IT guy, and I'm at a satellite office). Is it dumb of me to post so early in the game without getting a better feel of the company? I know this topic's been discussed before (at least once on the old Pmag board), ahh... no searching for me. Anyone?

They can find out anything they want to. Nothing is safe (unless it's running on a secure system and then they'll know you're hitting a secure system).

He sees you when your sleepin'
    he knows when your awake,
he knows if you been bad or good
so be good for goodness sake

The sysadmin can log whatever he/she/it wants so he/she/it knows where you're going and when you're there. If there isn't a specific policy on browsing then browse away until you are warned. And don't e-mail tasteless jokes either since all e-mails are logged too. (Two Vancouver cops were just fired for e-mailing ethnic jokes back and forth even though no one else received them.)

Snowdog is right...you can run but you can't hide from the admin. At least clear your cookies/temporary internet files/history on a very regular basis though.

And good luck w/ the new job dude!

IT Guy, IT Guy, if you're reading this, a worker of yours is surfing a forum for non work related stuff.

At least clear your cookies/temporary internet files/history on a very regular basis though.
Probably not gonna do much as they get saved to the server for "security" reasons (aka spying).

My guess though is that this guy is too busy to spend his time spying.

Yes take the IT person to lunch, buy them presents, compliment them frequently. This has saved many a worker bee's ass.

As for the cookie/temp/history clearing...I know it won't prevent your admin from knowing what's up. We know everything. I'm talking about somebody else--just some office Joe--- maybe walking up to your computer and clicking your browser drop-down arrow and seeing all those key lime pudding fetish sites you visit. That's always so embarrassing! And it gives them the ammo needed to persecute and blackmail you endlessly. Ah, but that's another "life in the cubicle farm" subject altogether...

If the IT guy gives you any grief, just ask Buster for that super computer hose-up code he gave to someone last year. Boy, did that IT guy get pissed.

Since you're in a cube, Uber, always have a work-related document up in the background so that if you have to immediately close TGR, something "busy-looking" will be there automatically.

I do this all the time, but sometimes I'll stupidly open up more than one IE window and switch to it by accident when someone walks in. Instead of looking at a TPS report, they're looking at skiing stoke. This is only ok when they're a skier, which is never.

I have a great little internet eraser program that allows me to hit alt / space and it instantly hides IE, and removes it from the task bar. I probably have run the gauntlet one too many times looking at the NSFW posts while at work....gotta stop that.

Or you could just hit <alt><tab> to go to the next window/application or <alt><f4> to close the browser window.

[/start beating horse] True - but neither of those functions remove the IE windows from the task bar or the task manager....this one does (through the program of course) [/stop beating dead horse]

Well, IT can always sniff your traffic to see what you're doing...I got a couple calls "ahhhh, noticed you're using a lot of bandwidth..." Yes, I was downloading music (albeit legally).

I think you can tunnel HTTP through SSH, which would encrypt the traffic. Of course then you're risking the "ahhhh, noticed you're sending a lot of encrypted traffic..."

Yeah, it's possible to completely disguise your web browsing traffic so it looks like you do nothing but send and recieve garbage to/from a single IP address.

Then, if you have a twitchy IT staff, they might decide that you must be trafficing kiddie porn and have you arrested.

    I still have my job!!

edit: Now that my sales are doing excellent, my boss does not care. Job first, post later. Now I still do try to keep the stealth going with Alt Tab, and that works great in my cube.

Our IT guy could care less, I have caught him on NSFW sites a few times.

I post/read in the morning for a bit, then a at lunch and check back at the end of the day just for shits and giggles.

Currently I am on lunch, granted it is 3:37pm, but I had calls to make to the EC before I could take lunch. Being on MST and doing a ton of business on the EC sucks, as I tend to get lunch 4 out of 5 days around 2-3PM.

I clean my browser and cookies ande files once a week.

The hard ones not to hit are the NSFW ones, but the URL usually gives me a heads up on what it will be.

    my 2 cents

It's called web eraser, and should be available online.
