Mountain Art
gincognito's avatar just prompted me to go check out Lawren Harris' work, as five minutes ago I'd never heard the name.
Pretty cool stuff, as it turns out. Great style:

So, what are some other good mountain artists?

I like Byxbe's stuff. He did a lot of etchings and aquatints.

Cool. Glad I could introduce you to my favourite Group of Seven painter.
Sick and ashamed and happy (and that third pic (Maligne Lake) is absolutely stunning in reality (dropped my jaw from across the room)),

Cool thread, shouldn't be buried.
My fav, a local guy Paul Folwell, skis like a champ at 60+, and gets lots of days. Most of his work is in oil and arcylic, so pics in my mind don't do much justice.

I have this one in a small print, it was a graduation present.
Skiing, where my mind is even if my body isn't.

I'm digging this one:
Would love to have some of this art on my wall at home.

Paul's a really great guy, lots of times he has small prints for sale that are affordable even at the ski-bum level.Skiing, where my mind is even if my body isn't.

gin: Group of Seven? I should go fire up Google, but more fun to find out here...
Samivel had some great ink cartoons in the old Ascent magazines. I should go scan some of John Svenson's (mountain guide in Alaska) stuff - his ink sketches are otherworldly.
Here's some of his wood-block prints:

Annndddd.... here's a Long's Peak rendering from James Niehues, the ubiquitous Ski Area Map guy:

That sucker is going on my living room wall. Though it does kinda looks like it should be on a Celestial Seasonings box...

There are a couple of Brit painters in Chamonix who do some nice stuff. John Norris is one (he also shoots a lot of photos) and there's another with a studio up near Argentiere. Don't remember the name, Tom will prolly know him. More climbing and general mountains than skiing though, I think.
Also Kami in La Grave does some cool action paintings. I've had a good look around for his stuff on the web but can't find anything. He did the artwork for the Derby de La Meije most years until two seasons ago. Really stylee stuff. I'll look around some more for it.

He used to do some badass routes with Marc Twight, if I remember right, like Aiguille Sans Nom and the nordwand of Les Pelerins...
He's a sculptor, too, I think, at least if I'm thinking of the same guy.

05-12-2004, 03:21 PM #11Correct. Some cool metal climbing sculptures. I would never have remembered his name by myself. That picture is quite different to the other stuff I saw that he had done (that was in his studio 3 years ago). Seemed a nice guy. He prolly wasn't trying to sell me any pictures either as I obviously couldn't have nought them.Originally posted by Innominatus

A group of Canadian painters, inspired by Tom Thomson, who got together sometime in the '20s and made a point of making "Canadian paintings." Mostly focused on landscapes in and around Algonquin Park and Georgian Bay. Though originally seven, the actual number of people associated with this group has swollen (Tom is often mentioned as a member, though he died before the formation (listen to the Tragically Hip's song "Three Pistols")).Originally posted by Innominatus

This is a decent enough place to start: http://www.groupofsevenart.com/artist_biographies.html

Not so much by way of mountain art, so I won't post any more pics. But worth checking out if lakes and trees are your thing.
Sick and ashamed and happy (and far from an art critic),
