Thread: Farewell Seattle... Hello Calgary

So next week at this time I will wake up in Calgary, my new home. It's still hard to believe I'm moving from the city were I was born and lived in for more than 30 years. But when you've met the woman who you think is "the one" you have to take some chances, right?

I will greatly miss Seattle. The perfect juxtaposition of mountains, water and forest. The living, vibrant greens blanketing the foothills. Knowing that within a 3 hour drive of Seattle I can either be in rain forest, an ocean beach, desert, walking a lonely mountain trail, or skiing (of course). The deep winter storms that crash into the Cascades, spackling white fluffy goodness measured in feet rather than inches. The quiet majesty of the view from the top of the King with the building anticipation of that last, perfect run. And I will miss the Seattle maggions I have met and skied with over the past few years, ski a line for me next time you're up.

Of course, Calgary has its attractions. The Canadian Rockies and Interior BC are sublime, and I understand that there are a few ski hills nearby... And I will have a few weeks in early May before starting my new job. So, Calgary folk, anyone up for a ski next week? What areas are still in good shape? Are the mountain bike trails opening up yet? Can I wear chaps at the Stampede? Looking forward to exploring my new home.

i've been living in seattle in my head ever since i've been there a few years back. i hope the rest of me will catch up soon. good luck on your move.

Welcome to Cowtown, mang. Pm when you arrive, I can easily be convinced to ski. Still good conditions in Banff. Mtn bike trails are still pretty wet, snow left in the hills - about mid-may should start to go.

If you wear chaps, they have to be with a leather g-string and no pants.......

Thanks all. I'm sure I'll get a few days of skiing back in Seattle next year. After all, it's only a 90 minute flight. Calgarians - I'll PM around my arrival time. Right now the plan is to get in Sunday, unpack and get settled Monday, and hopefully ski/bike/drink Tuesday onwards.

If there are (hot) chicks with assless chaps around Stampede, July can't come soon enough.

I had a job offer from a Canadian company a couple of years ago.

If you're a highly trained specialist, you're in, all you need is a letter from the employer. Moreover, NAFTA makes it simple to get a work visa, either at select border crossings or consulates (the Seattle consulate office fukin SUCKS!!!, however).

Viva got it - NAFTA work visa. Minimal paperwork and wait time, and I had no problem with the consulate in Seattle. It's good for 1 year and then renewable. Of course, after a year I should have other options if things go as expected.

You just missed the Woodsy Mini ( though Woodsy was not found)at Sunshine on Saturday

myself , redskea, (Red the dog made an appearance on Sunday) Mntlion and was that Dave or Doug?, Eldo and Ted ( Mtnlion Ted said to say Hello) and Playharder who ended up using the beacon, shovel and backpack I brought for Woodsy. Two days of skiing with Redskea means that my whole body hurts.

Welcome to redneck Alberta, what colour truck are you buying? I'm going to ski less now but could be coerced into going up once or twice. Lake Louise started taking a licking today and I'll see how Sunshine is making out tomorrow.

FYI - The weather in Calgary is currently sunny, temperature is 22 degrees celsius (about 75 degrees farenheit).

They're forecasting 10 to 15 cm of snow in the city by tomorrow morning.

This is not particularly unusual for springtime in Calgary. Hope you enjoy it here ...

The rain came down in waves tonight but looked like it was almost snow which I'm sure it was higher. Then the temperature plummeted. Guess I'm skiing again tomorrow.

You ski fanatics are so fickle. A bit of pow and suddenly you forget all about summer.

(Hmm, I hope the highway from Calgary is not a disaster tomorrow morning. It's right around this time last year that I went in the ditch trying to get to some spring pow.)

You comin' up skiing tomorrow? Bike shmike. I have a dentist appoint for 8:00 am tomorrow and they love it when I wear my ski clothes. Then to the hill. Pm or some such and we could hook up.

8-12 cm new. Damn, not quite enough for me to blow off stuff I should really get done today in the city.

Where are our 30 cm dumps this spring? There's not much I won't duck out of for a foot of fresh. Oh well, back to spring skiing later in the week.
