Thread: 71' bug roof rack

I just got a 71' bug and I'm about done restoring it. Its gonna be my new DD and ski car. Thing is I need a roof rack for my skis not sure who actually makes one for it. There are lots roof racks for bugs just none that I know of for skiing. There is a rear mounted antique ski rack for them but its a pile of shit.

Anybody have any experience going skiing in a bug that can help me out?

I'd be too protective of any car that I lovingly restored to take it ice driving, or park it in a ski area parking lot. Fucking people are brutal with their doorbanging.

meh, its no biggie to take it skiing especially with how little $$ I have invested in it. I did the whole resto to make a ski car anyways. You'd be suprised how cheap and easy it is to resto one with a little DIY.

Add some rust hindering resto products in the mix like POR-15 and the rust doesn't stand much chance (if you do it right). Now if drove it before I restoed it to ski, it would have rusted out from underneath me!

Air quality must be a big deal to you, I removed all the smog equipment if it makes you feel better.

^LOL. Poorly engineered compared to what? The huge POS american boats of the same era? The bug was designed by and used the same engineering principles as Porsche. Power to weight my friend. The design ended up being pretty successful in the race world....

Do you have any pictures of the 71-foot bug? I've never seen an insect that big, let alone one with a roof rack.

The heater thing is legit, there is a guy in colorado that will sell you a re-manufactured gas heater.

Yeah you can put gas heaters in them but you'd be suprised how good the stock ones work. Prob is the cars are all so old most of them don't work right anymore. But when they do work they provide heat much faster than any modern car I have owned.

Don't have to sweat the defroster without a windshield i guess!

I have a roof top rack, a genuine VW product, that will fit your car. I bought it back in the 60's from a VW dealer. It's still in my basement. It's similar to the metal & wood one in the photo except that it is all metal. It's in perfect condition. I attached a very efficient ski rack to it that consisted of cross pieces made out of two heavily polyurethaned 2 x 4's (u-bolted to the rack) with equally heavily polyurethaned dowels sticking up vertically from the 2 x 4's. The dowels were spaced so that a pair of skis placed bottom to bottom would slide snugly between them. These kinds of racks (the ski carrying part)were very common in northern New England in those days of yore particularly for ski teams that had to haul lots of skis. I could easily carry 8 pairs of alpine skis. I'd be happy to part with the rack, but it would be a huge pain to ship, so someone would have to come to VT to get it.
