Spring is mud season. Fall is leaf season. Both are desert/beach season.

Responding to the Jong's question about October = FRs given up on skiing already. I predict epic condescension from transplanted summit "locals."

Growing up in a mountain town I never heard anyone refer to fall as mud season. You're both wrong and Wikipedia agrees: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mud_season

"Mud season occurs only in places where the ground freezes deeply in winter, is covered by snow, and thaws in spring. Dirt roads and paths become muddy because the deeply frozen ground thaws from the surface down as the air temperature warms above freezing. The snow melts but the frozen lower layers of ground prevent water from percolating into the soil so the surface layers of soil become saturated with water and turn to mud."

I've heard "spring mud season" and "fall mud season"
    or "shoulder" instead of "mud"
hardly worth getting panties in a bunch over such semantics

It is semantics and we all know what someone means with the term, but yeah, mud season as a term originates because of melting snow in the spring. There is no fall mud season.

Terms like off-season or shoulder season may be better suited for late fall.
