    Canyons postpones opening day

Dec. 10 is the newly scheduled date. They have their new logo; they have their new orange bubble; they have their new snow making lake; they have their new season pass price...

and they have a new opening day!

You beat me to it Schindler. Decided to try the Canyons this season, due to my finances and their season pass offer. Well, they have me for this year, but next is highly suspect!

Now - just to get a reason...lots of unhappy folks (myself at the top of the list). We went and picked up passes today and nothing mentioned. I called after my neighbor (works on the hill now) told me he wont start until the 10th..and the office said all they could comment on was that the web site said the 26th...

Glad I have a pass at PC as well this year...(the wife doesn't so this is not going over well right now)...

That is very very weak from the Canyons. Shame on them.

Personally, I also have a pass at Snowbird, so it doesn't really effect me. However, IMHO, if Talisker listened to its customers complaints (which they say they did), which resulted in investors dumping $50,000,000 into the Can. to "improve", or correct those perceived problems, they should have no problem investing another couple of hundred thousand to compensate those customers for having to ski elsewhere while they clean up their mess. Of course, it is the Can. that we are talking about...

Well, first you attempt to install a new chairlift without bothering to check to see if you need any sort of zoning approval to do so. Or maybe you knew about some permitting issues but thought you could just push the construction through and shrug off the permits later. But, you get stopped before you get started because the zoning board turns out to not be psyched on your plans to build an unaproved large structure at the bottom of your new lift.

Why do you need a large new building anyway? Well, the detachable chairs on your new heated-seat bubble lift need to be stored inside or else their doppelmayr warranty will be voided. So you spend most of the summer getting that squared away. Except you dont get it squared away since you cant get the approval to build a shed to house the chairs at night. In the mean time you've already committed yourself to the project so you're kinda forced into just giving up on holding a warranty for your new lift.

So, by late August you start in on construction. It plods along uneventfully, and it even looks like things might be ready to go by T-day. Then November rolls around and, oh boy, here comes winter.

So you're maybe pushing to get things done and you maybe leave this one building that's meant to house a real big compressor engine unroofed for a few days while you wait to get it lifted in. The compressors's certainly not going to fit in through the door, right? And then, so it's turning wintery right? So an especially big gust comes along and flattens all four roofless walls and quite nearly the guys working on it. One concussion and probably some hail marys later and you've got some workers comp claims and a pretty f-ed project schedule to deal with.

For $250 bucks at the Sundance I get Dec 10...I'd expect a hell of alot more for double that at the Yawnyons.

Obviously Cuntyons has our best interest in mind. They're letting the base build up to provide a primo experience on opening day.

    What A big misstake

I have probably spent Thanksgiving and skied the Canyons 6 of the past fifteen years.

It always been pretty much a garantee that PCMR and CANYONS would bee open. Many years have been Great powder days on or around Thanksgiving.

How many people booked the most expencive lodging (Canyons) for Thanksgiving and are now??

Well Park City will be open (And more crowded)

But Wow I guess they took a play from the Deer Valley play book and decided to fuck the locals?

A Utah Ski resort waiting till December to open? real smart

    Time to steal market share!

If PCMR had any brains in their sales dept., they would be offering a deep discount for canyons pass holders till 12-10. Black out Thanksgiving cuz it's going to be busy anyway, I can hear it now: Look Mabel! Lifts that run!! This place rocks!!

    God, what an absolute embarrassment
-But i'm glad they keeping with the history of being a complete fuck-up'd shitshow, this place was starting to get too busy.

How can they not know to get permits? ...they are a fucking real-estate company! ...Seems to be a trend considering the way they "planned" their heliport last year
...Now it looks like I'm gonna have to get a bird pass just to survive...Motherfucker! I want some kind of reimbursement for this bullshit.

    great post E-star,
The Can, has always done things at the last minute, they just got the line up for the bubble a couple days ago and are hanging the gondola line now, why not do these things before November???

    Even better:
I'm sure it's gonna be a cakewalk getting done by Dec. 10th with 3 feet of snow on the ground.

    even betterrer:
they are spending time and money hydro-seeding the front of the mountain as we speak

    Dear canyons,
I will take over the job of running your clusterfucked shithole if you pay me as much as your worthless executives + I require ski days, every day, and I show up stoned. ...Can't be any worse.

Of all the years to delay the opening date. Last year would have meant missing a few weeks of skiing the WROD....

The caliber of bad management at some ski resorts has always amazed me. There's so much money at play, yet they get people that couldn't manage a Taco Bell running the places.

    management

Alta has good management...the place is payed for, PLUS, they don't have to run a ski area as a loss leader for a shit show real estate outfit. Sorry My Wasatch back friends, once Park worst always Park worst!
