I second Mr. Toad's suggestion. Drilling out the holes in the plastic base for the toe pieces so the screw threads don't grab the plastic base helps immensely.

I've owned this Kenmore and currently own this LG. Both were/are good machines. I've never had a problem with mold or other funk unless I leave the clothes in the machine too long after washing.

Not sure how to solve your problem from this point, but I wonder if your drill bit is dull or if you had the bit spinning too slow when drilling the hole? Either could contribute to the delam issues.
