You can do that, but I find its easier to count 4.5 turns of the tap handle once the tap starts cutting. That's the correct depth.

Yes, remove the pivot pin. Its been a while, but last I checked it has a retaining clip and goes on and off no problem. Unless they changed the design then this will do the trick.

^^ people have done it that close, but I don't recommend any closer than 15mm CTC. There is a post on wildsnow about putting them even closer which you could read and experiment at your own risk.

the 22mm screws replace the 16mm screws that would be used without shims.

1) 1/4" baseplate = 6.35mm
2) add 6.35 to the standard insert screw length of 16mm, and you get 22mm.

If this is true, what the hell are you doing on 140s? 150/180 or nothing. The all-metal toe is way better. I personally hoard the 150 series with the old geze 4 bolt all-metal toepiece.

Insert taps fit perfectly into an 8.1mm drill bushing, but don't fit into an 8mm or a 5/16 bushing. Alpine drills fit with a tiny bit of clearance into all three sizes.
