Remember when fritchis came with a little preload spring at the pivot? I learned how to ski on those pieces of shit and actually missed them when the freerides came out.

I need to see if I can borrow keith's pair. I think he mounted his about where it sounds like the dimple ended up being. I just know that every pair I've ever gotten from him, I prefered mounts further back than what he usually recommended. It might also just be an issue of different strokes for different folks. But like I said, earlier in this thread, my protests are mounted at 100 from the tip. It hasn't been often but I have felt like I could go back a cm on those........anyway, I've tried to be transparent in my thinking here. Hopefully everyone can figure out what works best for them.

But I definitely want to hear more from everyone who got a pair. Stoked for you guys that are getting snow.

Keith seems pretty convinced that unless you have a specific reason to venture elsewhere on the Wootests, go right about on the punch on the sidewall. One of my kids who is a pretty progressive skier went +2 from the punch on the 187 & reports "awesome". But again -- the punch is already forward of original projection and seems to be in a place Keith thinks will serve many well.

On the Protests, I've skied both lengths at +1 form the punch. If anything, I'd go maybe +2 from the punch on either size of the Protests. Which would, interestingly enough, be about where Keith ended up putting the punch on the Wootests... Of course one of my other kids is skiing the Protest way forward :).

Clearly there is personal preference & style involved.

Somebody with some CURRENT protests, measure where the punch is (powder goat?). It might be further back than you think.

Where I was recommending people mount the woos is actually further foreward than where the mount point is shown in the diagram on the protests. I assume that's where the punch is but I can't verify that because I don't have a pair.

The current Protest punch is at about 102 on the 187 cm. No convenient 196s, but my understanding is that they are proportional. It would be good if someone confirmed...

The 187 Wootest looks - on a very quick pull - to be punched at the 100 (maybe 100.5) zone.

So yeah, at least based on what I see, going at 101.5 or so on the Wootest would put you a shade forward of the current Protest punch

I do think I remember Keith saying that Kevin thought the current protest could stand to go forward a little bit. I'm still going with what I said earler for the same reasons but I think anything in that range sounds like it should work. Once I get out into something over a foot or two of snow I may change my tune and knock them forward 1cm but I can only ski what's available right now. And I am one of those dorks who will keep moving bindings until they feel dialed to me.

If I like the skis (IE will be keeping them) and think I'll like them better with a different mount, I drill them.

Couple thoughts after 3 days in a whole bunch of conditions:

1) They are very close to powder board performance in deep/untouched snow. Obviously, not as much float and you have to stand on both feet a bit more in a turn as opposed to getting lazy and weighting the shit out of the downhill board but they work. Well.

2) Hardpack performance is exactly what I was hoping for. So far. No, you can't really carve awesome turns (but you CAN carve!!) but you can controllably ski harder snow just as I was hoping for. I even can ski a pretty normal Jackson bump line IN the line. Changing direction/scrubbing speed without flailing is as good as it gets for a ski this loose/pivoty in the deep stuff.

3) I probably would have gone 187 stiffs if I could do it over again. If the name of the game is versatility I think a slightly shorter length would only make these more fun without much sacrifice. #compensatingforsomething ;)

I think the reduced pivoting/starving is due to the reduced width primarily. Holding the protest and wootest side by side the rocker profiles are quite similar, if you hadn't said anything I would have guessed same same. What's amazing is how similar they ski despite the pretty substantial reduction in girth. The wootest just feels more agile and sporty, not to mention far more practical for walking.

The current protest dimple is at 102. I mounted the wootest at 101 and really like it there, so much so I think I'm mounting the protest forward a bit.
