101.5 from the tip on which version- 187 or 196?
101.5 from the tip on which version- 187 or 196?
Sorry, please educate me. He didn't specify in the recent post with the 101.5. suck it
Funny how JONGs nowadays are both illiterate and uppity.
kidwoo's ratio math makes:
187: 101.5 from tip.
196: 106.4 from tip.
For anyone who's been following the HOJ project, 4FRNT made it official today. A Wootest vs Hoji head to head would be interesting.
^^I suspect the increased sidecut and reduced taper will make the HOJI more resort and hard-snow friendly, but the WooTest will rule in the conditions for which it's designed.
My thoughts too. Plus from having owned other Praxis and 4FRNT skis I think the Wootest will be lighter and livelier and the HOJ will have the same dampness that the other made by Elan 4FRNTs have.
I'm just glad to see the thinking moving in this direction. For a while there it seemed like 'fatter is better' was getting out of control. The thought being put into shapes/radii/profiles, and multiple contact points now is far more interesting.
not really illiterate, i just didn't understand his math. you guys are so mean.
Actually, we're not. Asking a stupid question that has been covered like five posts above will get you flamed. Asking a question about the method will likely yield a reasonable answer (though your intellect may still be questioned).
Kidwoo's method is based on having the same ratio of tip to tail for both skis. The 196 is longer, so you'll have more tip AND more tail, but you want the same ratio. Now, it might also be valid to do the ratio based on surface area of tip and surface area of tail, but that's a hell of alot more work.
Btw, I'm much more of an asshole in real life.
ok so on the 196 35.2362205 inches from the tail right?
^^ Think you typed in 160 from the tip, not 106. Cuz 35.x from tail is like 160.x from the tip. Way too much out in front.
Should be approx 89.6 from tail for 196.
But, honestly, just look at the line Keith and kidwoo draw on the ski...
*Facepalm. :o
Thought there was a catch. Almost didn't post, but then I noticed the whole 106 vs 160 thing and figured it might have been an honest typo and you never did a realitycheck.
Time for me to get off TGR and back to work...
Skied on them today.
Better than most in completely fucking horrible unskiable total shit crust on dust.
pics or it didn't happen
If you're at alpine tomorrow i'll buy you a beer for a ski fondle

boug: I will be at alpine tomorrow........leaving the property first run though
For everyone else that ordered a pair......they exist. I dun seen'em. I think you guys will be pretty stoked on taking the leap.
Been mostly lurking for awhile now due to the fact that I've been out east and can't sign in at work but moving back to CA next year and just wanted to add that this thread has me very stoked to be back on the forum more. Really interested to hear how they ski and congrats on getting them done.
Yessss!
Now that I see that topsheet on an actual ski, it looks better than I thought it would. On to the important stuff...
Do they meet your expectations?
Are those the standard/med flex and would you change that?
Were you in the snow at all or nothing but dust on crust?
Did you get them on a scale? (I'm not a weight weenie, but inquiring minds want to know)
Any last minute tweaks planned, or are Keith et al pressing them as planned?
They feel exactly like a protest but without the ankle knee tweaking of a full 130 waist.
That's a good thing. I haven't skied anything other than corn and "should have done something else today" snow.
Yes medium, no wouldn't change a thing.Quote:

You misunderstand. I meant exactly what I typed. CRUST ON DUST, as in gnarly half inch thick crust over dried out sugar. :D I only took one run yesterday to be honest. They're light years better than any ski with a traditional sidecut or those elf shoe s7/JJ skis but honestly.......I lack the motivation and intuition to ski that stuff well for more than a few turns on any ski. Too much jumping involved.....you sure as fuck couldn't turn without hopping. That's the snow though, not the ski. Keith from the mighty east coast took two runs and skied that stuff way better than I did or could. He was on a pair with alpine binders and other than the sound of crust breaking up and him breathing hard, he made it look like skiing. He spoke highly. I thought they were manageable where most skis would be useless.Quote:

I had them out in some corn and more funky crusty stuff today and they're good. They work really well in that stuff in that it's easier to ski and get through than pretty much anything but a spat shape. And the narrower width just adds to that. The corn was good but the lines we walked to didn't even go through so we bailed out halfway through the run to stick to higher ground. It's really fucking pathetic in tahoe right now. What's normally some nice south facing chutes is nothing but rock.
My pair with the thick (heavier) fiberglass weighs 8lbs, 13 oz, just over 8.75lbs. Keith's with the matte topsheet weighs like 8lbs 10oz, just under 8.75lbs. I guess the lighter weight topsheets will approach 8.5lbs.Quote:

The skis are pretty much done. There's a whole rack full of them. The january 31st mail date should be a reality.Quote:

What would I change? Nothing. Just like the protests, you can't get all racer boi all over the tips on hard snow but I already knew that. And even if you do drive the tips hard, it's no big deal, they just wash a little bit. Again, this was made to 'handle' the conditions I've had them out on better than most skis and thrive in every condition better than that. I can say, they certainly do that. That weird, sticky crusty shit that sticks around on the west coast in the trees when it gets warm......they're much easier to turn on than anything I've ridden, that's a fact. I mean really though.......you should see the "conditions" I've been on top of the last two days. If I hadn't just gotten these skis and wasn't making a point of skiing them, I would have gone mountain biking this weekend. It's bad. So far I'm completely satisfied. I want some winter snow to happen though so see how these things really float. That's still the only thing I'm even remotely concerned about. And even then, not really too much.
Click on that abortion of a thread on the main page where tahoe dwids congregate to get an idea of conditions. No ski made will make the BC here 'fun' right now. But from my dorking around the last two days, I don't have a single gripe so far. There's just literally nothing to even remotely fall into the realm where 'float' is even a valid question here right now. I'm seriously going to need to hear everyone else's opinions on these and really that's what matters most. I knew before even starting this, it was appropriate for what I personally was looking for.
Super duper pumped to hear this! Can't wait to get them soon.
I hope those of us in the PNW can offer some opinions regarding float once the skis arrive. :)
