no chance of stem cells or hgh for me, but maybe a series of prolozone injections. he's trying to help me out.

Had stem cell/PRP cocktail during ACL repair last May with part of the mix going into my other knee that has been repaired twice and is generally unhappy.
ACL recovery went great, new graft is bomber. Other knee didn't really change much, still generally stiff and cranky. That one was first repaired in '83 so it's been through the mill.
Jury out for me, the ACL repair was a revision and I have stability again which is awesome but hard to quantify any other benefits.
I got my appointment and wuz gonna have a Pure PRP procedure but thinking I should pony up for the SC.
Bump PRP dun in right knee, minimal pain a swelling so far.

The Doc was super professional and nice, he is also skier and kayaker. Cut me a break on the cost as well. Only minor stiffness 5 days later. The nice thing about PRP is it triggers the bodies natural response with stem cells. Not quite as good as direct injection with stem cells but also not as expensive.
With my lower level of damage and little pain I was a good candidate for PRP. The process is pretty interesting and went really well. I even drove myself home to condo @ Pheim 2 hours later. All in all time will tell but so far its been really low impact and I plan to go back to work on Monday.
Did a Mtn bike ride 11 days after knee PRP. Feels ok.

Well since this thread is rather new, I would like to add to it. I have a large cartilage defect at the end of my femur and I am about to undergo an oats procedure augmented with bone marrow stem cells. Then I will follow up with at least one more injection 4 to 6 weeks later. Has anyone followed up with stem cells post op? Just wondering.

No articular cartilage defect in the medial femoral condyle from a traumatic injury, slammed into a couloir wall. Everything else is healthy. Oats procedure is the gold standard surgery- similar to Tanner hall with microfracture but worse because it's down to the subchondral bone. I was seeing if anyone has been there on this forum.
I opted in around eight weeks post-op. If the next question is about the difference it made, your guess is as good as mine. So many variable play a part in recovery/repair. My thinking is, if the money is available, history of cancer low, and even a chance it will help, why not.

Did a good day of ski trail/glade work last weekend and the knee feels good. Rest of me is sore from all the hiking and wood cutting and dragging but knee did not hurt during or after. :)
I still get weather induced aches and pains but its low grade and not a big deal.

His story will be interesting. He has had a shitload of injuries including eight skull fractures (all at the same time) that caused him to lose all hearing in one ear and half in his other ear. In the course of the multiple treatments he'll do, he's really hoping to recover at least some of the hearing in the ear that still works.

Have costs dropped lately, and, any good doctors found outside of Tahoe? That's a long way for me, although, wtf, nice place to hang for a little while. It's the follow ups I'm also concerned with. I ain't no jet setter. Anybody in the Vail/Summit area? Lots of knee people there.

Dr. Evans in Vail charges approx. 2500 per injection, PRP about 800. Dr. Brandt in THRIVE at Edwards personally I have heard is much better and more experienced, 2800 per injection. I have met with Dr. Brandt and he seems to know his stuff almost better than anyone considering he has been practicing for over 20 years. The best and most educated surgeon in Vail with regenerative medicine knowledge and research experience is probably Dr. LaPrade. There are not many orthos with a ton of knowledge in Stem Cells Research so just because they say it is not worth does not necessaily mean its true. They are so close but yet so far. Also keep in mind at Steadman in Vail they also have their OWN Stem Cell Research facility in the building. They are constantly finding out more and more and relaying that info to their patients. If price is not your thing and you want the most advanced stem cell treatment with an ortho surgery (if surgery is needed), look into Dr. Broyles at Bone and Joint in Baton Rouge. He is folllowing the augmented microfracture surgery that gives you 12 injections over a period 4-6 months. This is the biological knee replacement I have mentioned before in the past and most likely will be a benchmark in the future for orthos.
Hi, obviously not much of a contributor here but I have used gimp central as a lurker and feel I have something to add to this discussion. On October 4th I had surgery at the Steadman clinic in Vail with LaPrade. Besides a shredded meniscus and a couple of cysts my real problem is articulated cartilage damage on the lateral side. In the previous year I have been offered a meniscus transplant, a femoral osteotomy and partial knee replacement from three separate Boston ortho's, one of whom had a direct view into Gillette Stadium($$$$). LaPrade offered me a basic clean up; remove cysts, debridement of the cartilage, meniscus trim and a floating bone chip under the knee cap removed. He was the only guy who would to do a cleanup. Everybody else thought I was to far gone and wanted to get drastic. I asked for and received PRP and Stem Cells from my hip. LaPrade believes in PRP and thinks it more effective long term then cortisone. He has a PRP company on site at the Vail Surgical Center.
The good news is LaPrade and his team offers Stem Cells treatment. My bone marrow was harvested from my hip, the stem cells spun out and injected into the surgical site at the time of the procedure. The bad news is LaPrade does not think it is that effective, at least for my issues. He said that the stem cell concentration from bone marrow is only 1% as opposed to the much richer stem cell concentrations from other sources like they are approved for in Europe. I insisted and got it anyway. He was cool and I liked him and his team.
So how is my knee? To early to tell. Doing rehab- swimming with fins, stretching, balance work, single leg strength work now, biking and I have even done some hiking. I had previously had zero knee surgery's. I have a lot of rebuilding to to, in last three years my leg and ass has shrunk significantly. The destruction the cyclops cyst was causing in the lateral front of my knee is HUGELY improved with its removal. My articulated cartilage damage behind my knee still hurts quite a bit. He was not aggressive with the meniscus trim on purpose and I still think it is irritating my bone on bone. The hope is we have enough improvement in the pain that I can align my knee with better musculature in my legs and ass ( and the loading it is going to require to build) like I had previously, which was significant. I am going back in February and getting another round of PRP and Stem Cell. It is going to be hard to pull out what part the stem cells played in my improvement if any but I am super glad I had it done.
Just signed up for core decompression surgery mixed w/ Stem cell & PRP cocktail injections for both hips. Previous FAI surgery recipient on both hips and tons of rehab...hoping this upcoming surgery will provide some relief. Heading to the Novi bone and joint center in late march...Dr. Loniewski from Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists will be preforming the deal. Will update periodically on progress eh.
