Hi Dr. Mark, I am finally out of 11 weeks of the cast & removeable boot for a calcaneous heel fracture. The break was like a "V" so the orthopedic surgery highly advised 2 big screws-internal infusion--on a size 4 foot 2 days after the accident. The screws extend beyond the foot and there remains a bone fragment at the end of the heel. The surgeon ruled against making an incision on the swollen foot. He told me the screws could come out later and then he could shave down the fragment if it bothers me. The issue: the entire foot swells walking on the foot for any extended time. This causes so much pain in movement: the ankle & entire foot, so much so that it inmobilizes me. I do not take pain medication. Against the surgeon's advice, I use an ace bandage dailyto prevent swelling. which is the only way I get painless mobility to build back my calf muscles & strengthen the ankle & foot and get the blood to return back to the heart from the veins in my foot. Agree?
