She's a beaut., or at least she will be once I get done with her. Great platform to start with, though.
Mechanic is doing the leakdown test Friday, and then she is mine, assuming all goes as planned.
Here she is-

Ah HA! You found one. :D
Time to take the bow rail off and put in drop down cleats. :the_finge
I'd dump the seat and get a leaning post instead also.
What did you get for electronics with it? (if any)

Bow rail is coming off. Pop up cleats will be installed, teak will be Cetol'd, hinges will be replaced.
I like the reversable seat better than a leaning post. I can lean on it if I want.
Electronics- Garmin fishfinder, Garmin GPS/depth sounder, VHF radio, stereo.
T-top has an electronics box and a t-bag for the life vests.
Engine had not been turned over for 2 months at least. Put the muffs on, turned it over, and it fired up first shot. Sweet. I love it when a plan comes together.

Sadface. :(
Btw, add some bungies to the ttop rod holders.
Rods like to "disappear" out of them magically.

We have a little place called Bob's Machine Shop down here in Ruskin, by god, Floridahhh. I've been over there a couple times to get stuff fabbed for my Whaler. Don't you worry about the jack plate- soon enough. Although, with a 12 inch draft- I might just go with the manual.
Awww- who am I kidding? I can't even consider a manual jack plate. Might be a little longer for the power one, but it will get done.

Stick it out, go hydraulic.
Don't halfass that shit.
And I'm totally serious about the rod holders.
There's a Penn International 50 2 speed on a custom rod somewhere in the middle of Cape Cod Bay.

Arrggghhhh-
Fuck me, thrown piston in one of the cylinders, compression of ZERO with a Z. Made offer on hull only- I know a guy that sells used outboards, so I can get a pretty good deal on one.
Shit shit shit. The hull was real clean. I hope he bites. This could work out to be a better deal, but much more work than I had anticipated. Turn key, my ass. Luckily, I am in the drivers seat. Once again my weekend birthday plans have come to a screeching halt.

Sorry man :(
Yeah, I know. I already own one. Luckily, I had this thing checked out. I can't imagine buying without a sea trial and a compression test, at least. Thank god. We'll see if he accepts my offer on the bare hull. Could work out in my favor. My buddy has a 2000 OX66 with almost no hours on it, like under 100. I just feel bad for the guy selling this boat. That would be some bad news to get, right when you think it is a done deal. Maybe he shoulda had it checked out too?

The realistic side of me says he knew about it and was hoping someone would just buy it w/o sea trials/full check up.
Plenty of idiots out there that would.
That is NOT something you don't notice.
How many hours on that Yamaha?
warthog
10-22-2007, 10:23 AM
30 hours on a supposed factory rebuilt head.
Makes you wonder if the tech missed it, or if it wasn't broken in right. Why would he have them in there and not have them fix the piston too. Sux for him.

I'm gonna guess he didn't break it in (they didn't tell him to) after the work and smoked the outboard.
The owner knowledgeable or what?

I would say no, but I am dealing with the broker. The seller lives in Ft Lauderdale and has to sell.

Nothing yet. I think he is crying in his cheerios as we speak.
Got a line on another one, possibly. I have the time, and I drive a lot for work. Makes it easy to go look at every POS out there, and make an informed descision. Just frustrating to get so close.
It might still happen.

Or praying for someone else to bite and not have the outboard looked at.
If you look at ads up in my area and see something you want looked at lemme know. I'm on the prowl for a friend already anyhow.

I think we got a deal. Just want to see it float, and flex the transom with the engine up before I sign. I never got my test ride, so I need to see how she sits in the water, and make sure the transom isn't rotten. I am a big PITA when it comes to spending my money- but hey, cash is king.
Got my engine guy looking for a nice clean outboard. Plenty down here, just gotta find the right one.
I've been away for a few days and just saw this. One thing you may want to consider is looking up the core value of that engine to a rebuilder and offer the seller that amount. here's why.
1) The worst case scenario is that all that engine has is rebuild core value. Have that engine rebuilt by a quality rebuilder that has a good warranty and your off.
2) Many off brand two stroke oils have inferior additives that will freeze piston rings on engines that sit for extended periods. Considering that it was a factory rebuild I would say there's probably a 50/50 chance of it being that. The downside is the expense of pulling the powerhead. The cylinder wall should be looked at for scoring in the dead cylinder as well. If it is that you may get a good engine for rebuild core value.
You didn't say what the other compression numbers came out at, were they within 10% of each other minus the dead cylinder? If so it points back to the rings on that one piston. If the readings were up and down it's time to start over with that block. There are quite a few advantages in trying to pick up that engine cheap and fixing/rebuilding it, controls, wiring etc.
I would rather have a bad engine that was rebuilt by people I knew than start over looking for a used engine with potentially the same problems.
I'm going to Key West for Fantasy Fest today but PM me if you want the #'s of some good Yamaha guys.
Good luck with that hull, it's way better than that green one you were looking at. notice how the V shape comes all the way back rather than forming a pad like the 20's do?......Much better ride and handling.
P.S.
If you decide not to keep it, try and be there when they pull the engine off and watch for water coming out of the bolt holes= water in transom.

Hook- All those thoughts and more were tossed around in my head. Ultimately, I would rather have something not re-built. If I sunk $1500-$2,000 into a rebuild, plus paid a little more for the engine, let's say $800, then I have a $2,300- $2,800 investment in an engine that would be tougher to resell. If I sink 4-5k into a newer engine and use it for a couple years, I can resell that engine and repower with a 225 E-Tec.:D
Compression was 110 on the others- normal for that engine. But, the compression test was just confirming the problem. The spark plug with the metal mark, and compressed gap is what showed the problem. It was hit by something inside.
I got a 2000 HPDI 200 Yamaha for the boat. It is clean, not rebuilt, 6 month warranty. I feel good about it. Much better than a 1998 with rebuilt head, and bored out cylinder w/ new piston. 200 vs 225 is a little slower, but also 60 lbs lighter, and a little more fuel efficient.

Oh, forgot to mention- Controls are staying with the boat- another reason to look for a Yamaha.
Have fun at Fantasy Fest. My buddies are down there in an RV, staying on Stock Island. Bachelor Party- I got the invite, but the baby had other plans. Something about 12 dudes in an RV just didn't sound all that fun anyway. Take lots of pictures- I am sure they will be appreciated here.

A trick for the bolt holes in the transom.
After pulling the outboard and making sure the transom is dry, redrill one size up, fill them with west system (if you're feeling saucy, use the high strength filler) then redrill for the outboard.
You'll rip the whole fucking transom off before you move those holes.

I'll be doing that when I paint the hull in a year or so. Right now I just want to enjoy it.
I will be there for the re-mount, to make sure no water or black wood is present. I did the "put the engine in full tilt and shake it up and down" trick. The transom didn't flex a bit. Also, it sounded out the same from top to bottom with a plastic hammer. Sounded solid, but I guess it could all be rotten too. Doubtful- this thing has never seen bottom paint- always been a trailer or high and dry queen.
I'll get some decent photos once she is done-ish.
Thanks for all the support and help guys. It really helped. It is not a fun process, but the end result is sweet. I think I got at least a 10 year boat, which is what I was looking for. Something for my daughter to grow up on. Yay!!!

27- It is all we could come up with. Better too big, than too little.;) We strapped it down real good, and it required lots of jimmying with the forklift. No other way to get it out of there, with a dead engine.
The boat is only paid up at that high and dry til Oct. 31st, so it was now or never.

I don't follow. ICW? Inter-Coastal Waterway?
Nice, IMHO classic white looks much better on a Mako.
Or as the famous boat designer L. Francis Herreshoff said " There's only two colors you can paint a boat, one's black and the other one's white. But only a fool paint's his boat black.
If it's been sitting awhile, you may want to drain the old fuel out before any gets into your new engine. It will also enable you to remove any water from condensation.
Don't let your wife chip the gelcoat when she smashes the bottle of Champagne over the bow on Thursday.

Yup.
Look around at boats that have been sitting in the water.
Brown stain = from brackish/fresh water.

New engine is on. Test run is today.
My holes were bone dry! Nothing better than a dry hole.
Engine guy was pretty surprised how dry the transom was. Looks like I done good. So far, at least. I am sure she holds a couple surprises for me.
