Took a trip with rocket charters out of manhattan. Fished the east river on an out tide with live eels. Got 5 keepers right around dark:

Nice...no bodies? :D

Where in the East River did they take you? From the photos it looks like you're around mid-town, on the incoming tide (drifting from the empire state building up past the chrysler building...)

How much was the charter? Good boat/captain?

yeah, i kept mine, the first one in the pictures, but no one else wanted to. i can understand why. but they are predators and migrate with the baitfish and eels that migrate up and down the coast so they probably aren't that much worse to eat than one you catch in the long island sound or the ocean. regardless of where you catch it you aren't supposed to eat more than one striper meal per month because of the mercury from them being at the top of the food chain and all. i guess it is kind of sketchy, but i impressed the heck out of the captain who at another time in the night had a live eel between his teeth while untangling a line.

the captain says he has found 2 bodies in something like 30 years of fishing in these parts. he also says he fished with de niro one time. really cool guy, he is a professor at a local college and does this on the side. he goes right out of 23rd st on the east side near the gulf? station by the fdr.

we were all over the east river but caught the fish along the northeast side of roosevelt island. we were drifting fast downriver due to an outgoing tide. as soon as the tide went slack, the fish stopped biting.

boat/captain great, I was able to get a salesguy who covers my company to make it a work event and it was a great night. on the website you can see some of their catch, one of them is 55lbs, pretty sweet fish. i got to go a couple years ago, similar circumstances and same drift when my buddy caught this right next to me:

it was a 32 pounder i think. prices are on the site i think its pricey, like $1000 for an evening trip for 5 guys including a few beers and some of his homemade meatballs which were good but pretty chincey. he took care of all rigs, poles, baiting, which ruled because i hate eels a lot

edit: northeast side of roosevelt island

possibly.
some stripers hang out on the hudson/east river year around and just head up the hudson/east to spawn.

Is $200 per person really that bad? I'm looking into doing a trip for a group of friends, one of which is getting married in a few months. What is a reasonable price to pay for a half day?

Kokomas, nice looking fish

the price might be a little high for 4 or 5 hours. it was pretty cool to walk 4 blocks from my apartment for stripers. for a serious trip i'd probably look elsewhere, either long island, cape cod, or delaware bay.

i'm going on a bachelor party fishing trip tomorrow out of cape may, nj on this charter: http://www.finsngrinssportfishing.com/contact.asp
looks like prices are lower, of course you have to get there. i'll report back on that one.

If you wanna come up to MA/RI/CT I'm sure I can set you up with someone.

Thanks for the offer.
Might take you up on that. Half of the group lives up in Boston so something in between would work. Haven't really given a whole lot of thought to dates just kind of brainstorming ideas now.

went out on that charter i was talking about out of north wildwood but didn't fish for stripers for whatever reason, got some seabass and croakers, don't think the big bass are down there yet. i did see a drunk retard put a sparrow in his mouth and spit it out at us, that was pretty funny

East river striper fishing is awesome...my rowing coach used to leave us at the end of practice and scoot down the harlem to the east river so he could fish all afternoon.
