Thanks everyone. here (http://shepherdwong.smugmug.com/gallery/3517612#198654297) is a gallery of other shots I took from this contest for anyone interested-- Stuff I wouldn't have shot if it wasn't for the contest. I really enjoyed going out and taking shots for this theme. (I'm recusing myself from further contests. I like taking pictures but don't like being voted on. I'll just go out and take pictures and contribute to the new contests)
Rules for the new contest are,
1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.

2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.

3. The contest moderator will choose 5 of the photos to put in a poll for the mags to vote on and decide the winner.

4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way not an option)

5. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.
This contest's theme is Minimal.
I'm thinking of powerful shots that minimize what's present on the picture.

Here are a few older examples that I think fit the theme.

Nice Wong. Where were your shots taken? Glad you enjoyed the topic, I agree "abandoned" spots are fun to shoot and that's why I choose the topic. I guess the tricky part is making the "junk" interesting.

It was in Salt lake city, about 6000 south and state. I had seen the building riding trax and wanted to get into it, but it had been habitated by some feral dogs who scared me away. It was my original idea to shoot it but instead found the bus and other stuff just down the train tracks from the building.

In the end, I liked the penny better, but I thought was too much like the nut and bolt pic, and it had too much noise in it (the hallway has a lot of noise too, but it's kinda masked by the textures of the materials in the photo).

yeah I've been feeling that too, about my own pictures and some others.

what would you consider minimal.

i think the concept of minimal can have a lot of difference faccets, colours can be minimal, subject can be minimal, compasition can be minimal - if you tried to minimize every aspect of an image you would be left with a black slide, the trick then is to minimize a couple of different aspects of a concept but with out minimizing the response of the viewer.

MOHSHSIHd
10-18-2007, 01:22 PM
IMO minimal in this case should refer to the visual aspects of the picture. Perhaps minimal light, color, density, subject matter...

just a thought.

Lonnie

In the case of the penny, since I exempted that shot, I'll talk about it (I wouldn't want to bias the view on some of my other shots at this point). I was thinking (more literally) that it's the minimal amount of US currency. Of course some of the other ideas above my apply as well.....

Like I mentioned on an earlier thread, I think it's great seeing how different people interpret the topics. Reading the initial topic post, I took it as making an impact with as little as possible in a frame, but also 2 of the pics I posted I don't think really follow that interpretation, but posted anyways.

What would I consider minimal? This shot from Truth on another thread kind of sums it up. Shot with a white piece of paper and desk lamp, I'd say that's pretty minimal, along with it being white on white and the shot in general.

Overexposed Night at the Park

I didn't take this specifically for the contest, but after seeing it, I thought it looked pretty minimal. Plus, I am tired of submitting nothing just because I don't find the time or don't like my results. This is a very overexposed night shot. It was an accident, but I thought it looked kind of cool. It is as bright as it is because of a large light source to the left of the frame - hence the long shadows.

Nice, I had only thought of it as minimal in the sense that it was a shot of one thing, not about the monetary value aspect of it. Very nice. I didn't notice too much noise like you mentioned above. There's maybe a little in the penny pic but I can't see any in the hall.
