Wow, full frame and 11fps! Too bad Canon can't produce something like that.

Oh man I think Santa might be bringing me a D300.
I really hope the Multi-Cam 3500 works well.

If they have the IQ to match the specs, Canon just got knocked down a few pegs...

Not to mention on top of the 12-24 also a AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, AF-S 400mm f/2.8G ED VR, AF-S 500mm f/4G ED VR and AF-S 600mm f/4G ED VR

Now if only I could afford these toys. :(

Those are impressive specs.

12mp on a full frame chip=larger photo sites=better image quality, presumably.

I'm happy to see Nikon choosing quality over quantity when it comes to pixels. I wonder what the dynamic range is going to be like.

This is cool.

...and yeah, that fast wide angle zoom brings a smile to my face too:)

I think maybe Astropax is rethinking that Canon move.

I find it interestng that the D3 is $3,000 cheaper than the Canon 1dsMKIII. $3,000 is a lot of money towards shiny new Nikon lenses.

Don't cha mean LENS as in singular nor plural, like AF-S 400mm f/2.8G ED VR:rolleyes:

Holy cow.

Self cleaning sensor!?

Wireless transfer, plus remote wireless viewing up to 5 cameras while they shoot.
(D300)

WANT.

I think this is probably Nikon's answer to the 1DMkIII. Their high-mp flagship will probably come out in the Summer of 08'.

WANT.

And a bigger viewfinder - 100% coverage. Hopefully brighter as well :) Interesting that you need the bigger, higher voltage battery pack or wallpower to get 8fps

I imagine the line will be quite long - even though it appears they've already switched over production to the D300 from the D200 (all of the big retailers appear to have the D200 on back order since last week).

competition is good.

Is it a Nikon CMOS sensor? Or does Canon make it?

Yeah...but actually I stopped that move when the 1DMKIII did not meet expectations.

Eh? The D3 sensor is supposedly a "Nikon Design" - not manufactured by Sony as most of the others have been. Who's making it is currently unsaid.

mmm feel the heat Canon? good! now catch up and make me even cooler stuff and sell it cheap! :)

Nikon/Canon competition is a good thing

ETA 14-24 2.8! woah!!!!! freaking cool lens

D300: 51pt AF to EV -1 /w 15 xsensors! 1MP LCD! ISO6400! 6fps! 100% viewfinder coverage! Liveview /w recording sensor AF!

Fast enough to hand hold the right f/1.4 or f/2.8IS lens under a full moon!

The Nikon cannot do it according to their press release ;)

It can only do 11fps in 5MP DX crop mode with no AF

"5:4 ratio crop mode (10 megapixels, up to 9 fps, viewfinder masked)
-Ten / eleven frames per second continuous in DX-crop mode (AF / no-AF)"

So will DX lenses work on the full frame, or is this similar to the Canon deal where people will have to buy all new lenses?

I see...so is it pretty well accepted that CMOS is superior to CCD?

I guess there's a high speed crop mode a la the D2X that will allow you to use DX lenses on D3.

True.

Now that Nikon has entered the full frame market, I'm really eager to see what the D4 FX will offer. Should be 20+ MP with a DX crop to about 8 or 10 MP.

Now we'll see if they try to get back some of the Photojournalists/companies they lost over the last 10 years. AFAIK no News Agencies shoot Nikon... not one.

They will work, you just won't get the full frame. In fact I think I read that if you slap a DX lens on the thing the viewfinder actually blacks out what won't be captured so you still see exactly what you will get.
