Dry Fly Rods? Bueller, Beuller...

Any suggestions on a sub-500-buck sweet 5 wt rod for dries. I've decided my quiver of 2-buck-chuck nymph and streamer rods just plain suck for run of the mill dry fly fishing. Preferable 9-9,5 ft 4 pc.

I see that Sierra Trading post always has Powell rods on sale. I have a 6-wt Powell Ultra (circa 1989) that fishes like an oak broomstick. I only use it for chucking big leeches at night and clubbing bull sharks. I'm sure Powell has a softer side...

I'm still a bit of fly fishing JONG, but for a 5wt dry fly rod under 5bones, you've got a lot of options. I've been hearing a good buzz around the Temple Fork Outfitter line this year as well as Redington's higher end stuff (upper 400's). I use an $80 St. Croix 2 piece and it does the trick.

What size rivers do you fish? I picked up a TFO 3wt that has been a complete blast on smaller rivers over the last couple of months, and I also found a 9'6" XP 5wt that I found on craigslist for 275 shipped that is a hand cannon.

Winston has a couple nice rods under 5bills that should work well. If I remember correctly, Scott E2 is a decent rod that will fit what you're looking for but is barely under $500.

Well, heard good things on Temple Fork. I think even Dec Hogan has a line of Spey rods from Temple fork...BTW he is putting on a FREE spey (AKPM its not related to birth contral for animals either) clinic at Sugarhouse Park in SLC tommorrow at 6pm. Go to www.utahonthefly.com for info.

Don't know anything about Scott rods ( late 80's Scott pole and googles were cool:p ). I've heard that the BII rods from Winston are the bomb...but thats alot of dough for a clutz stumbling thorugh barb wire fences and sage to put in a rod. I better find a good warrantee!

200 dollar tfo rods cast as good or better than 500 dollar sage rods. The only thing that seperates them is that TFO rods are definately built stronger and thus are a bit heavier (I've seen more sages break that anything else).

1- Don't buy a BIIx if you're into small dry fly fishing. BIIt will suit you better. If you want to go the Winston route and don't plan on slinging #2 streams or lots of double nymph rigs, get a 5wt from their LT series. They are 5pcs but cast like a dream. One of the finest trout rods I have fished.


2- Scott Rods are quality! I don't fish them but know plenty of people who do and swear by them.

Trigger Pulled- Sage 9 ft 5 wt 4 pc. 25% off since they are discontinuing this line. Not quite as tasty as the G4 but pretty close!

ack...i came too late. the rods at sierra are all pretty fast actions. i'm more of a medium action guy myself, and it came to the store the other day. orvis 4 piece rods, mmmm sweet tastyness. 200 bucks, got mine for 139. gotta love deals. the powells are pretty good, i think i like the albrights better. and as for the winstons, oh hell yea. that will be my next rod. their plant is about 15 miles from my hometown, went and tried one out a couple weekends ago. damn! but, im late.
