View Full Version : The fabulous fly rod storage trick

Some of you may know this one, but it is one of the better things I have learned through my fly fishing club.
How to store your fly rod quickly without losing or breaking pieces.
First- let out enough line to break the rod in half. I use a two piece, but this will work on four piece rod s too.
Once rod is in two pieces, attach the fly to the hook holder, or stab it into the cork butt.
Start winding the reel up, always making sure the top piece is floating free on the line.
Once the top piece is close to the bottom piece, loop your tippet around the base of the reel once.
Then just reel up until the top pice and bottom piece are snug against each other.
I use this method to store my fly rods, instead of tubes. I find it a whole lot easier than removing the fly each time.
I'll post pics if this doesn't make sense.

That sounds like a swell idea.
No offense meant, but I figured that out when I was, like, 7 years old.

Yeah, well I figured out not to cunt up threads when I was 5, so I guess we are both dumbasses.
Like I said, most of you probably already know this trick. I have seen plenty newbies(I have only been FLY fishing for 1 year) that don't know this trick.
Also, if you read the other thread, the guy lost part of his fly rod cause he broke it down before getting to his car. This woulda saved him some hassle.
Go back to pissing off the rest of the board. This is our spot.

For some added security...two garbage sack/bread sack twist ties interwoven through the guides and around both pieces make this method bomb proof.

Jeez - I said "no offense". Won't you be my friend?
Just to show there's no hard feelings, here's a time saving hint: When you're putting your rod together, just run the line from your reel directly through the tip-top guide. You'll cast further because all the line drag from the other guides will be elliminated. I can post pics if this doesn't make sense.
Now that I've played nice, can I pretty please wade in to you guy's "spot"?

Funny how if you preface a statement, no matter how much you sound like a dick, with "No Offense" people expect no offense to be taken...a condescending remark is a condescending remark regardless.
[edit] ^^^^ sorry, I forgot..."No Offense"

Here's a hint:
If a post says "some of you may know about this", and you are one of those people, well STFU.
If the post helps you out, then post.
I'm looking at you Jer and AKPM.
Just resist the urge to post on every fucking thing you see. PLEASE.

I thought it was a helpful post. A lot of us have just started fishing and don't know what we're doing. I appreciate all advice, seemingly obvious or not. In this case though, I've just been breaking down my rig at the car. My rod usually has to share a space with a curious one-year old and dog, so that seems to be the most prudent option. But I'll keep your method in mind for the future.
i have a case that lets me break my rod in half but not remove the reel. i do take the fly off and unstring though, mostly because i almost never use the same fly from one day to the next. but also because i once left the fly on and it got hooked to the inside of the case and was a PITA to get out.

Like AKbruin, said, it was helpful to those of us who are new to this and who may not have someone to show them all the tricks. So, thanks.

Glad it helped someone. When I learned it, I threw my tubes in storage and haven't touched them since. Woulda never figured it out if my buddy hadn't showed me.
