Tech jong looking for something relatively cheap. External. Found some Lite-Ons, LGs and HPs online for well under $100.
I will be burning DVD "movies" of home movies and pics and occasionally DVDs for archiving photos.
Any recommendations?

I've always used Sony for my optical drives, and always been happy.
Their proprietary software is unnecessarily, well, proprietary. But it has always worked well. Their hardware is solid. Never had any problems out of it, at all. When it's time to replace the drives I have now, I'll probably buy Sony again.
Sony normally isn't cheap. But if you can find something on clearance, or a discontinued product, I wouldn't hesitate to grab it.

I think I have the Maxell DVD RW in my Dell. It works well and is dual layer.

I prefer the Pioneer 111-d... it's very reliable and burns any needed disc formats... There are quite a few new 18x drives available the one from LG seems to be getting good reviews and has lightscribe which is pretty neat..

edit: The Pioneer has now been updated to the 112-d
