Not to be a dick or anything, but seriously, wet your hands before you grab it(unless you kept and ate it)

Brookies taste gooooood:smile: This is really good info for any newbies surfing here. Have you ever seen a fish in heavily fished waters with white fungus all over them (fishing ranches are notorious for this)? One of the reasons this happens is because all the "slime" gets wiped off the fish when handling them which promotes infection and bacteria to grow. Usually this stuff ends up killing the fish in a matter of weeks or months.

Another thing I have learned in the last couple of years is to only use a net if you absolutely have to (e.g. big fish or fast water with no eddies). Play the fish to shore, wet your hands and try to keep the fish in the water as much as possible. Don’t pull it up on shore! Once you get pix or whatever, face the fish up stream in well aerated water (not slow “frog water”), make sure he’s not tits up and let em’ go.

If you have to buy or replace a net, buy one made out of rubber or really fine mesh. Big mesh not made out of rubber tends to get caught up in the fish’s mandible, gills, teeth, etc... which again, can damage the fish when they are thrashing around. Trout are much more *fragile* than most fresh water fish due to the lack of scales.

Just trying to give some pointers and keep catch and release effective. If you’re grillin’ and killin’, have at it.

BTW – If any of you are fishing on the South Fork of the Snake, clunk those rainbows on the head and throw em’ on the grill too!
