This dude uses a guitar pick to do so

I've done it with a guitar pick, helps to use 2 though. A thin one to open the gap up then jam a thicker one in there to pop it open. Pretty hard to break the iPod itself so don't worry too much.

Drop it half way down a flight of hardwood stairs. That worked well on mine.

Yes, my battery kt came with tools, but I used a knife/screwdriver to do the initial spread and guitar picks to slide along and pry the case open.

The key is to understand how it goes together - that lets you know how you need to release it. One face slides over the top of the other, so the pick goes in at an angle between the faces, but the key is to slide it up or down to release each of the tabs that extend from the outer side to the inner side.

Thats really why they give you hook tools to open the case - you are pulling the over-sliding cover out and away to release the little tabs from the half of the case that slides under.
Yes, guitar picks seem to work better - the plastic is harder than the tools they gave me.
Hard to explain, but it all makes sense once you have it apart.

just be careful. when i took my mini apart and put it back together the controls no longer worked, meaning the ipod was useless by itself. luckily i have a ipod deck in my car so i can still use the ipod in my car but i had to buy a new one to use when i wasn't in the car.
