What about doing a little contest boys and girls?

If we come up with a subject or something and give a couple weeks to take a picture and submit it then have some voting on who's is best or whatever. All just for fun... I think with the group we have here there could be some really great work come out of it!

What do you guys think?

What do you guys think?

That's a capital idea, dear boy, capital idea!

First topic....Boobs!

Start shooting boys and girls, oh and girls, self-portraits are highly encouraged.

I don't really like idea of a competition, but it would be fun to maybe come up with a theme every say 2 weeks, and then go out and shoot that and post our results(trying to stick with stuff actually shot in those two weeks not older stuff, for motivation to get out).

I think the contest part of it would be nice to give atleast some incentive to take better shots or spend some real time working on a nice shot and spur us all on to become better photogs. I wouldn't be a prize or anything, just to see what everyone is thinking. I do agree with the taking the shot within the time frame of the comp or maybe the time frame plus a week.

On second thought maybe people could just critique as they feel on whatever shots are put up. That might be even more productive...

I like it too... on the Rocky Mountain Photog website they've got a similar thing- each month is a different theme. Its awesome to see the photographic perspectives some of you guys can have. I'm in. Maybe we can get a sticky at the top of this forum each month to post in.

Ok so let's throw out some ideas for themes. I'd prefer 2 weeks rather than a month.

Fark.com has this every week. They have been doing it for a while so maybe poach some ideas from there.

Here is a link to past themes. (http://www.farktography.net/index.php?module=htmlpages&func=display&pid=7&cm=7&cb=30) They have links to the actual posts too.

Some of them are:
"Solitude"
"Up & Down"
"Hope"
"H2O"
"Gas Stations & Pumps"
"No Place Like Home"

I like this idea too, and I think 2 weeks is a good time span and photos must be taken and posted with in 2 weeks of the theme announcement.

Here’s my proposal for how is could work:
brice618 picks the first theme (since he posted the idea).
Who ever wants to play takes and posts a pic with in two weeks (all in the same thread or in individual threads?).
brice618 picks his favorite 5 and create a poll for every one to vote in.
The winner gets a nice warm fuzzy feeling and gets to pick the next theme.
And so on.

^^^ That works, and it keeps it simple.

The theme should be "gravity" since this it TgravityResearch :)

^^^ You're out of line!

Brice gets to call the first one, since it was his idea... BD4A, you've got to win one to call the next theme. ;)

Every "comp" as it's own thread (OK, two... one for theme and the actual pics plus one for the vote).

Fark.com has this every week....

I like their contests. The photos aren't always at the level of the contests on dedicated photo sites, but they are usually very creative and fun. How they do things is a bit different than what has been mentioned here so far. Themes are announced well in advance. Then on a predetermined date everyone posts their photos and people vote. I kind of like that format, but I also like the post your photos throughout the 2 weeks idea. It could create a "one-up" atmosphere, but it would suck if some people thought "I can't compete with that, I'm not posting anything". Also, posting everything on one day helps create that surprise "wow, I wish I had thought of that" aspect. It is also kind of exciting to have everything unveiled at once. My bit of advice: don't get too specific with themes. The vagueness will foster more creative interpretations.

This is a pretty cool idea. Looking forward to seeing the results and maybe participating.

I most certainly agree with you on everything said there. I only mentioned the fark thing because they sometimes have very vague and open to interpretation themes. That is also why I added a link to past themes so people could get ideas.

I love this idea as I have been thinking about this as well.

Trouble with the Fark contests is that you can submit pictures taken anytime. Its better to have to take the picture during the course of the contest, hence the two week duration.
Encourages us to go out and shoot things we might not normally.

I'm not sure how the suggested format prevents me from submitting a previously taken photo. If the theme is "gravity" as suggested before, I might have a perfect photo from two years ago that I could submit during the two weeks. Hopefully, the maggots will get into the spirit of things and get out there and take new stuff. Sometimes on Fark, I see people post old photos that fit the theme but not enable voting since it is "cheating".

Maybe I am not understanding the proposed format...

The “rules” will state that the photo must be taken within the two week time period.
The only way I can think to guarantee this would be to force people to link the photo from some place like smugmug.com where the judge could view the exif data, but that is getting too complicated.
I’ll just offer that if you post an old photo karmic retribution will be a bitch.

Honor system on that I guess dbp.

OK I'll make a thread and and the contest will start today and end july 3rd. give me a little time to think up an idea. I'll send suit or whoever a note to sticky it.

I'm all for it and the timing requirement is what I think will make it. None of this pull a shot out of your archive stuff.

Anyway, this is how pbase does it:

Rules:
1. Photos must be hosted on pbase.com.
2. Photos must be embedded in your post. See
http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=18022
3. Post only the medium versions of your picture. Larger versions will not be considered.
4. Only enter up to 3 photos per-contest.
5. The host is not eligible for their own contest.
6. Any picture you've taken is eligible regardless of time taken and camera
7. You can do all the post processing you want.
8. Have fun.

When posting, please do include a direct link to your photo so that it can be viewed at its original size.

How the contest works:
1. The host gives a topic.
2. You post up to 3 of your images that go along with the topic.
3. The host chooses the winner 7 days after the contest was started.
4. The winner becomes the host for the next week. If the winner does not post a new contest within 2 days, the 2nd place winner is the new host.
