The hatchery on the Sandy can provide some decent steelies, but you won't be alone.

I'm not to worried about being exclusive since I'll be a noob, but whats a decent steelhead? 3, 4 lbs? Ive never fished salmon or steelhead Im pretty pumped.

8 lbsish. 15+ you'll have your hands full. Super fun cuz most are fresh.

Plenty of small creeks with trout near by. Explore a little and you should find tons of little guys. Check the regs carefully.
Summer runs 6-10lb with some in the teens on the Sandy.
You'll only be an hour from Maupin on the Deschutes. Great trout fishing and good steelhead in September-October.

Slay some Sturgeon on the Hood River. :D
Plenty of options....check out topos. I can't remember the names but there are a few decent fly shops in Portland and 1 in between Ptown and Hood River.

If you're gonna be around that area for a while, do yourself a favor and head over to the Metolius just outside of Bend. The Redbans are sweet and the Bull trout grow to double digits.

Fish jigs under a float (OK bobber) for steelies...depending on water conditions keep them lightly dressed or gaudy. Should be plenty of early summer runs in by now.

The Fly Fishing Shop in Welches (www.flyfishusa.com) is the shop mentioned as being on the way to hood, good people, good prices, good advice. It and River City (www.rivercityfly.com) were the best shops in PDX, IMHO. If you are content with urban fisheries and the crowds and quality that go along there's plenty of fishing in the PDX/Bend area. Summer weekends will be crowded.
If you are looking for something a bit more out of the way and better quality head up to the Olympic peninsula of Washington (which you must do).
