View Full Version : Any reason I shouldn't get a Canon 20D?

After some thinking, I ordered a 350D yesterday. After more thinking, I came to the conclusion that I should have probably gone for the 20D. I was considering adding the battery grip to the 350D to make up for the dinky size and I realized that it would put me less than $100 from a used 20D. My primary uses are triathlon/cycling races, travel stuff, and probably ski racing after my eligibility runs out next year.

5fps
Better AF
Feels like a real camera

So, is there any reason I shouldn't return the XT for a 20D?

Ordered from B&H. I picked up the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens. Next wallet burner will be a 70-200 f4L or Sigma 70-200 f2.8. But that's for another day...

You seem to be an action shooter.

So a good reason not to get the 20D would because you have an extra $4000 to buy a EOS 1D Mk III

Aside from Summits answer....no, there is no reason.
A wise decision infact.

I like the thumbwheel on the 20/30D more than the 4-pad XT series.

Though I would like to get a 20D as well, many people have made the argument that the XTi might simple make a lot more sense in a variety of situations. From what I've heard, the 20D is better in image quality, focusing, FPS, etc, however, only marginally so. Based on that, many people say the XTi might be the better buy.

Personally I was planning on getting a 20D/30D with battery grip, but now I almost think it makes more sense to get a XTi + battery grip till the 40D (or whatever it will be called) will come out. Any thoughts?

Have you held both in your hand? The build on the 20D is significantly better. If you plan on putting your camera to more rugged use I would definitely go with the 20D/30D. The xti is really small and is just not that comfortable to hold. Putting a heavy telephoto lens on it makes it feel as if the mount is going to rip off. Another pet peeve of mine with the xti is you have to use the same button to set both aperture and speed, while the 20D has dedicated controls for both of these. With the 30D out, I bet you can find some pretty decent deals on a 20D. Personally I think the "upgrades" on the 30D are not worth paying for.

when the 40D comoes out in sept or oct... it will be $1200-$1500

20D has better build, controls, AF, and FPS by a significant margin over the rebels

buy the best camera you can afford at the time you are buying one. If the pictures you are going to take between now and september won't matter, why buy one at all?

Hmm. That's something worth thinking about. I know that bodies pretty much come and go; but, can I really expect things to change that much within the next few months?
