Anyone else addicted to poker like me? For the last year or so, I've been completely addicted to poker. I love it. I can't stay away from it. I play it online constantly. Does anyone suffer from this condition?

I admit it. I am also addicted to poker. Texas Hold 'em mainly. I play online at parisepoker.com, and in live tourny's at Canterbury Card Club in the Twin Cities. I'm so bad that this summer when I was flying home from D.C. I had a 3 hour layover at the MSP airport (no, not Matchstick Productions). I had a friend pick me and drive me to the club (about a half hour if driven very fast). I played cards for about an hour and a half, then he drove me back to the airport. He was late picking me up in the first place and I ended up running like fricken' O.J. across the airport, forgot to check to see if the gate had changed, it had, so I ran back across the airport and arrived at the gate just as the lady was closing it. I ran so damn hard I had to get the barf back out when I sat down because I thought I was going to hurl. I was dripping wet with sweat and everybody stared at me thinking, "wooaaahh, what's with the late dude?"

Yeah I'm not even going to touch the live money games but i figure 10 bucks for a hour or two of entertainment is worth it, plus they pay out to like 12th place. Just something to pass the time until the snow flies.

Me and my roomies have been driving down to the Chip-in casino in escanaba and battling a bunch of 65 year old packer fans in hold em tournaments, its a pretty good time and last time my buddy got second place and won 675 bucks.

I've discovered that I can't win online. I deposit money, and two days later, it's all gone.

On the other hand, I've been playing in a live tourny every Friday night for a little over a month, and have won money in three out of four tournys. I'm sticking with live games.

I am hoping to become a professional online player. At first, I lost a few hundred playing at Party Poker. Then, I was basically even for awhile, fluctutating a few hundred dollars. Recently, I've been killing it, but I've been too busy to play a lot. It's the perfect job for a ski bum - play from home at any time of the day. I still have some learning to do, but I think I can make at least $15/hr and probably more like $25/hr playing shorthanded NL. It's way better playing online for a few reasons: no commute time to a casino, you don't have to spend money tipping the dealer, and you get a lot more hands in per hour. You can track your stats more easily as well and make adjustments in your game. You can move tables instantly if you're overmatched at a particular table.

I play alot, but it supports my ski habit. Online poker is very profitable if you now how to play. The best way to make consistant money is to play limit poker at the 3-6 or 5-10 tables. Stay away from No-Limit, althought it can be fun, the variance is way to high and one bad beat could kill a whole lot of profit. Basically limit poker is a math game, play when the odds are in your favor and fold when they are not, thats how you make money.

This year I am going to Utah and takiong one day to go heli-skiing, all paid for by internet poker.

I'm glad to hear you are winning. However, I wouldn't say you should stay away from No-Limit. You can definitely make money at it, but it's a different game than limit. There is more bluffing involved, so you have to play the player as well as the cards.

Oh I agree totally, the issue is more of you constantly have new players coming in and out of the games, especially you have guys trying to hit and run. NL is definately profitible, and I do play, mostly 1 and 2 table tournaments.

A really fun game is pot limit omaha, lots of fish in that sea

The problem with online poker is there are no tells, no player reads, and no observation of your opponent's habits outside of how he bets. In my opinion... a huge disadvantage.

Also, be aware of players in cahoots. It would not be hard to build a "team" and sit at the same table playing together to milk a common opponent.

It's only a huge disadvantage if you're a superior brick and mortar casino player. Most people (even a lot of "pros") aren't good enough to consistently get the right read on other players without giving off "tells" of their own. Certainly online is a different game, but there is no disadvantage. You just have to play differently (like you would play PL Omaha differently from 7 card stud).

As for the second concern: it does happen, but not repeatedly. My friend used to do contract work for the IT dept. of one of the major off-shore poker sites. They are constantly looking for cheaters, tag teamers, how to keep the game "accurate" to real life, and a million other concerns. While you certainly can go in for one big score as a "team," they make it very hard to get it done repeatedly...

My advice to anyone with online poker is just to keep in mind that the money is just as real as your chips at the casino. The game just moves so much faster it's easy to forget sometimes.

BumZ: I've pondered the same thing as you only for moving to Argentina. Imagine making $15-25/hr. in a country where the minimum wage is $100/mo. Could support a pretty high living standard. I've backed off for now to see how my style holds up over the long run at low-limit and how the game changes in the next year as even more players (who are 16-17 now) come online.

Just play 3 3-6 tables at a time and know how to calculate pot odss and you'll do fine. Also if you wnat to really keep track of the sharks and fish go buy this:

I use it and have a database of over 5000 players. plus I keep a buddy list of all my "favorite" players and when they are playing, I head straight for that table.

Poker (especially NL hold'em) is exploding right now & TONS of suckers are coming into the game, especially online.

I used to play a lot online, but I'd much rather play a live game now. I enjoyed online games, but to me, it becomes too much of a crap-shoot than live games due to the sheer number of people & tables involved.

Also, drive-by-shootings are all too common when there's so many games to pick from. If you can't handle those tactics, don't play.

Saturday night I walked into Greektown Casino with $75, sat down at a 3-6 Limit table, stood up 5 hours later and walked out with $512. Bling!

I agree with you guys about the internet poker thing being profitable, just not for me yet.:( Last week at the casino there was some young kid sitting next to me telling me about how much cash he makes online. I just listened and smiled. He rebought three times before the break, and then went out as soon as the rebuys closed. He was a cool kid and a decent player, just way too aggressive (raising out of the big blind with just about anything), and definitely not a good reader of people and betting patterns. I actually see this happen a lot in the casino. Seems like every week I meet some guy who just can't tell me enough about how much money he makes online. But the internet game just hasn't worked for me yet. I'm absolutely certain it has something to do with the fact that I can't see the other players, can't read them, can't talk to them, etc.. I know the math, calculating pot odds, drawing odds, etc., but I don't use those skills much in my weekly tournament at the casino. I totally agree with there being a bunch of suckers online. I'm sure I'll figure it out at some point, but having success in live games keeps me from dedicating much time to it. To date I've made the final three tables in all but two of the tournaments I've played in. It ain't big money going out when there's three tables left, but it's getting paid for playing poker for six hours and having fun.

And I'd totally be down for a weekly L.A. game.
