FACK bro, that really really blows. If its any consolation, looks like the EC season is ending soon(rain and 50 today) so you wont be missing too much. And at least the injury was at the end of february, not the middle of december. Damn, seems like the EC crew is really taking a beating this year. I'll be channelling all my healing vibes your way.

those last runs of the day can be brutal, with the flatter light, tired legs and such. sorry to hear about the injury. remember the wise words of capt. lance murdock: bones heal and chicks dig scars. hope it won't hinder any st. paddy's day proceedings.

Basom! SO Sorry to hear about this....<<sending speedy recovery and safe surgery vibes>> hang in there, and hey....on the bright side of the "why aren't there any more powder mags for the year issue"..... at least you wont have to see a new one until sept when we all hope you will be healed and ready to charge the new season.

Shit! That sucks Ben. I for one will be glad to see this season drift off into history, we've all read far too many of these posts (including one by yours truly) this year.
Really, really bummed to hear that, I know even in December how pumped you were for the summit, to have it snatched away now really blows.
Not much else to say, be glad you got in as many days as you did (see CantDog's "at least the injury was at the end of february, not the middle of december"), get fixed up quick, don't slack for even a day on rehab, blah, blah, blah.
APK, noodles, gin - be careful, this makes 2 out of 5 of the crew from when I was at Jay  Perhaps I'll go back to needlepoint. Those things are sharp, though!

I guess I'll just have to save this moster spliff I was gunna bring down to tahoe for the next time I'm in beantown.
and that makes me sad.
FWIW, if I had to do it again, I would not do a patella graft for the replacement. I would go hamstring or cadaver.

Don't worry basom, I hear the weather's supposed to be meh next week. So you're probably not missing much, except maybe excessive gambling, drinking, and debauchery.
As for chics digging scars, we'll have to trade notes on this soon. :D
I hope the surgery goes exceptionally well. Heal up soon!

Really? Mind elaborating? Depends a lot on the doc doing it, but general consensus still seems to be that patellar is the best in the long run.
We have way too many among us with first-hand experience.

I still am unable to kneel down on that knee without significant discomfort. Might not be a big deal for someone who doesn't spend much time on their knees ;)

That totally sucks, sorry to hear it.
It was about two years ago that I did mine. It is not as bad as it sounds. I did a ton of research and decided the hamstring graft was best for me. My surgeon said it has really gone up in use due to new and improved attachment techniques.
Rehab is not that bad. You will be able to bike your way to recovery and be at 100% by next fall. With the exception of missing the rest of this year (and being on a killer trip and summit bound :() you picked a good time to do it. Figure surgery in April, in house re-hab for 6 to 8 weeks and then bike your way to recovery over the summer. Then gym it hard in September and October and hit the slopes in November.
Good luck!
BTW, the drugs you get are pretty fucking good.

03-02-2004, 11:03 AM
Damn, that sucks.
But at least you'll have plenty of time to heal up for next season.
FWIW, I also went with a hamstring graft. Modern hamstring techniques are excellent and you won't have patellar tendonitis problems like you might with a patellar graft. I had no problem getting my hamstring back in shape afterwards. But there are individual factors too, so you should discuss with your surgeon.

Shit, my man. You know I feel your pain--I guess I'll be beating you into surgery by about a month.
If it makes you feel any better, the Jay days you listed beat my entire season, and your SA days on their own weren't that far behind what I got in this year.
Besides, think of all the extra time you can spend drinking with Bill now.
oh man, sucks to hear that Basom.....At least you got good some good days in tho....

surgical bump.
sooo after jumping through HMO hoops, balking on one doctor, and one scheduling nightmare later i am finaly having my knee done tomarrow.
i'm trying my hardest to get amped up for all the hard work in front of me, but am having a difficult time finding the mind set i had right after the injury, when i was all pumped up. now i have rehabed the knee to the point where i am crusing around with out a limp and no pain on stairs, or any pain at all. so knowing that i am going to be in another world of pain when i come out of anesthesia tomarrow, and that my mobility is going to go backwards for quite a bit, is not that fun of a thought.
i have been geeting pretty fat too with out much excersise besides leg lifts and ski sits. so i hope by the time i'm getting into the cardio part of the rehab i dont look like brando.
anyways, i'm sure there will be some oxycontin induced posts coming from basom this week.

It sucks having to wait so long, but get yourself motivated to get ready for ski season.
And as far as weight gain goes, it shouldn't be too bad. I know when I was in that stage where you're not doing much yet in PT, the painkillers made me not want to eat much. You'll lose muscle, but I didn't gain weight. Then you'll be spending a lot of time at the gym for rehab - look at it as an opportunity to get in even better shape than you were before - you're there anyway...
gincognito
05-31-2004, 10:15 AM
Positive vibes sent your way. The "world of pain" following the operation and the swimming out of the sleepy fog are highly overrated. It really wasn't so bad (I seem to recall the initial injury and following morning to be infinitely worse - in fact I think I still have all the painkillers they gave me following the slice). The lack of mobility and flexibility will be the biggest bummer so worry about that before getting to psyched for strength.
Here's hoping for a hot nurse for ya!
Sick and ashamed and happy (and thanks for the vid),

I don't know. Pain levels are totally different for everyone.
When I tore my ACL, I heard the pop, felt it give out and had no pain whatsoever - not even a twinge. My knee felt great but was unstable until I had the surgery. When I came out of anesthesia I was in the worst pain I've ever experienced - and it lasted for days. I lived on percocet and ice, which just barely took the edge off.
Second knee surgery - torn meniscus hurt when I walked on it at the time of injury, and after surgery I didn't have any pain and didn't even need so much as an aspirin. Nothing. I felt GREAT from the moment I woke up.
So honestly, I wouldn't even know what to expect in terms of pain for myself if I was going through it again. I'd just plan for lots of pain and be happy when it isn't as bad as I thought...
Prep your room where you plan on sitting around watching TV, elevating your leg and sleeping. Make sure you can get to the bathroom without tripping on stuff with crutches. Set up a cooler, books, remote controls, phone, laptop... Have a bag so you can carry stuff with crutches and drink cups with lids so you can carry them without spilling. Stock up on stuff that settles your stomach that you can make yourself eat with painkillers (oatmeal, yogurt...) Hopefully you'll be lucky and all of that will be overkill, but it's better to be prepared, even if you have someone taking care of you....
Percocet's a binder-upper. 2 bowls of raisin bran for breakfast will do wonders for your attitude. :)
Good luck with the surgery and rehab. altagirl's list of stuff to keep close by is a good one.

Good luck, man. I can totally empathize with you. Gimme a PM or call if there's anything I can do for you from here. And stay ahead on those painkillers, at least for two or three days. Percocet should keep you happy.

xboat, sorry to hear that. You're trying to avoid surgery? Hope you can, but it doesn't seem too many people have problems walking/running around within a few weeks after hurting it. Then you go out and play basketball or ski or whatever and you realize it's not right. Good luck.

10-27-2004, 11:44 AM
i'm bumping this thread today because i just came back from the doctor, and the news was so encouraging that i feel its time to bring this full circle.
its been a long road since february 29th, and a lot of work. hell, its been a long ass five months since i got knifed. some ups, some setbacks. and to tell you the truth six weeks ago i wasn't sure if i would be on skis before the spring. as it is i'm about four weeks away strength wise, and the doc doesn't even want to see me again before i get back on the snow. As long as i keep doing what i have been i will only miss two weeks of the season (stowe opens on Nov. 19), and that feels so good to me right now.
i want to thank everyone here who has positively effected me knowingly or otherwise. i am constantly amazed by the friends i have made through this board, and the support they have provided.
i can't tell you how much the stoke on this bord has kept me hungry, and the humor has helped the time pass.
the season is so close i can taste it, and my excitement levels are off the charts (mostly due to the early start on the west side). even though it will take some time before i will feel comfortable fully charging again i still think this can be a better season than the last, which was better than the one before that, and so on. progression will still happen, and it gets me all tingly inside to think about.
to all the friends on here that i have had the pleasure of making turns with, and to all those i have yet to meet. thank you, and i'm almost back baby.
i'll be with you soon, and i'm going to rip the shit out of it, so bring a camera.

Cheers
sure guy. heres how it went down:
over the shoulder day that went bell to bell, so i was worked by the last run.
if you are familier with wildcat at alta you know how it is a series of gullies. i was maching huge turns from gully wall to gully wall. as i climed the skiers left wall or 'bank' at a good clip my intention was to turn right, back into the fall line of the gully. As i unweighted to turn i saw utter sweetness in the gully to my left, and made the instant choice to continue left, down the fall line of the gully wall to the left. mind you i was navel deep at this moment.
with good forward momentum i attempted to suck my knees to my chest and point my core into the left gully, but the lower half of me kept wanting to turn back into the gully i had come from. something caught my right tip, some harder snow, a rock, a root, i have no idea. but as i tried to suck my body up, it just stayed extended, and then everthing came down on my right knee. all my forward momentum and downward force at the same moment. hyperextend, upper body pitche forward, right leg stays lodged wher it is, pop, season over.
so i guess high sided does not explain it well, because that implies an uphill twisting fall, where as this was more of a dual fall line, ridge fubar, clusterfuck, end over end hyperextension, in deep snow.

I'm a bit worried that maybe they won't provide the floation that's needed to propel myself over bricks. I originally tried on some nice purple Rossignol v4k's (pretty sweet rig if I do say so) and I definately didn't float. Maybe I should buy some spats and try.

Awesome news, b. I'm still wondering if I'm truly ready to go, even though the doc said I was a few months ago, and the knee has never given me any real reason to doubt it. Strange, but the mental hurdle seems greater after the second one. Maybe cause I really don't want a third one.
You can do it. I know it takes a while to trust your knee again, but it'll come back!

Yes!!! That is such awesome news, Basom! Glad you're back. Believe me, you'll appreciate skiing even more after working so hard to get back to it.

man i was trying to fuck this nice little rear on saturday. iceman was in town and we were hanging at the bar his brother works at. needless to say we were indulging. Ice's friend Will picked up two ladies outside who were bumming train fare. one was cute and both were drunk.
long story short, i was invited home with them, but due to my hallucinatory state i opted not to vomit in her sock drawer, and just assured her i'd call her later. stupid whiskey dick.

hahahahaha. i couldn't sleep well on the couch, your boy from manilla sounds like a fricken chainsaw. i think i bailed around 7:30 am, probly shouldn't have been driving. your brother makes a mean martini.
also, could you confirm that Jill was Hot, or hotish at least, i think my memory may be altered slightly.

Yeah she was at least hottish, maybe a little better than that. I didn't know you got the invite, or if I knew I forgot. I went to bed after 4:00, you were asleep on the couch. Aparently my bro and George (the guy from Manilla) stayed up even later. Long day yesterday.

all i know is it took three people four attempts to write down her phone number. i was beyond gone. good thing we went to wills and smoked like a hundred joints after that.
i am very glad i didn't have to fly anywhere yesterday.

Man, they had to do some shit like change runways or something, we were in this packed little commuter-type jet, we sat there on the runway for almost half an hour with no AC running, alcohol was literally dripping from every pore in my body. I'm sure the lady sitting next to me was stoked.
