A few test shots under the lights last night. Had the ISO cranked to 3200- You Canon guys will be happy to see the results. I knew this was a limitation of the Nikon. Noisy Noisy, Oh well.

If anyone can suggest software to mess with this, let me know.

Here is an untouched one:

See what you can do with it, if you like.

Here is an orig. untouched:

Here it is after a run through Adobe Lightshop:

What do you think? What can I do to mess with these?

I am going to try to shoot at 1600 next week, and see if it will still stop the action as well.

Thanks for the help. This photography stuff is really fun when you can see the results of your actions so quickly. I don't think this would be of any interest to me without digital. Instant gratification and all...;)

I've heard good things about Noise Ninja
http://www.picturecode.com/
but haven't used it myself

Another solution ($) would be to buy a used 80-200 f2.8 zoom. The extra stops over the 18-200 would be useful.

Baby steps. The 80-200 is an option. The 70-200 is an unatainable but desireable option. Someday soon one of these will be in my bag, and this will not be an issue. Right now, I am trying to make due with what I have.

I'll take a look at noise ninja. Also, woulda prolly been a good idea to have the high ISO noise reduction function turned on. Whoops.

Here's a single rudimentary pass through Noise Ninja:

I use noise ninja and am happy with it. I have also heard good things about Neat Image. From what I understand, NI is a little more user friendly up front, while NN has a steeper learning curve but more control available to an experienced user.

Thanks everybody- I'll try one of them. That first pass looks a lot better Likwid- thanks.

What shutter speed was that taken at? I would actually expect a lot more noise than that at ISO 3200, but perhaps the exposure was short enough to not dirty it up too much (though it IS pretty dirty.)

I think the second picture is far better in its original version than it is after the lightshop touchup.
