View Full Version : The next step up from a Gotama?
So I've been skiing a 183 Gotamas and really like them. It's my everyday ski, but I'm starting to feel I would like something a bit stiffer, maybe longer but with a similar shape.
I skied Kindswood fats (116 under foot) the other day and loved how far forward you had to be but they are to big for an everyday ski.
Any thoughts on a new ski that would fit this bill?

kwood midfat extras, or head IM103, or nordy FF105 (good luck finding that one), capitol el jefe, um, nordica blowers are sick too, 183 for mortals, 193 for big gun days.

The new 07 Gotama!
Yeah, I had thought about that. Maybe in a 190. Is the '07 model stiffer?

The KW mid-fat is a definite option and pretty cost effective for me, not to mention supporting the local crew. Although I also like what I've heard about iggies and the bro model. I'll do a search and see if I can find reviews of how they ski.

I have a pair of kw midfats and love them.
So far Ive put 22 days on them, in SA this summer.
They would make for a great everyday ski.
Powder - they float well, its hard for me to compare, not having skiied many fatter skis though.
Crud - Theyll handle about the same as Gots in chopped up snow. They bounce around a bit more than Gots Id say, but still feel quite stable.
Groomers - Very easy to do big long carves. You can take advantage of the springy bamboo core to shorten up your carves quite a bit as well. I was surprised how well they handled groomers/hardpack.
Bumbs - Well, they suck in bumps. Or maybe I just suck at bumps.
High speeds - As I mentioned, they chatter a bit, but feel very stable despite that. This possibly has to do with the core again.
Durability - The topsheet chips apart all over the place. Its only an aeshetic thing though, as it doesnt expose the core or anything. The bases arent super strong, but its hard for me to compare since I skiied over more rocks than any ski would be able to handle.
On a side note, they are quite light as well.
Id be happy to answer any other questions you have about them as well.

From just playing with the 07's in the shop, I would say they are significantly stiffer. More so than my 05/06 gotamas. Although I have never skiied em...so who knows.

^Yeah I skied the new gots and you can definietly feel the increase in girth.
But since this guy lives in NZ I would say that he has no reason not to ski Extra flex Midfat KW's. Or he could even hook up the new 193 Midfat in Standard if he wanted more length. They will be available for mags in November... pm me for details or if you are interested in group rate shipping (about $100 off).

193 midi's? That changes things. Let me get sober and think.
Is the cut going to be the same?

Maybe PM Skier666 for some beta on the 07 Gotamas (190s) vs. the Kingswood midfats - he's got both, is a rippin' skier and definitely a good and reliable source.

Good idea. I'll get onto that in the next few days - once I work out how to PM.
Skimasterflex - It's the summer bike season in NZ soon and I'm having a little baby in April (obviously I have to buy them skis before me as they don't have any at all!), so a November purchase might be a little early for me. Having said that if you put an order in PM me before hand, I might just be able to swing it. I'll probably have worked out how to receive PM's by then to...
llyon, thanks for the words - I must admit I did wonder what the hell you were doing in South Australia with mid-fats? and then the cerebral juices started flowing again.
If you're in NZ get the Kingswoods. Sweet ski and you gotta support the local start-up.

I've got the 183 gotamas from last year and have the 193 Sanouk (with Samurai logo) and like that combo.

How does the Sanouk ski? Can you compare it to the Goats? 'It does this better, that differently etc...'
Skimasterflex - I just got an email from the Kingswood people, who said it would probably be early next year before anything new like a 193 mid-fat happens, they sound super-busy. Sorry to be the bearer of ill tidings.

Sanouks are like a wider under waist and much, much, much softer Gotama. They are a fun, rippin' ski in soft open snow. But if you are big and heavy, the tail won't always let you do what you want...noodle.
