I've decided to try some of that 'normal skiing' this season for the first time ever. I've been on tele for 6 years now, and want something for those less fresh days. I imagine they'll get used when it's either icy or crusty. If it's freshies the tele skis are getting used, but I might switch to the alpine skis later in the day and try some hucking or something on them like that. My wife in convinced that I'm going to suck at alpine skiing for awhile, but I do p-turn alot on the tele gear when the conditions call for it. I like to go fast and turn as little as possible, and I seem to like a stiffer ski.
So i'm trying to figure out what to do ski wise, should I got with something mid-80's underfoot, or maybe get some mismatched explosiv's from mtnlion?
What about bindings? I'm 150lbs and 5' 11", something that goes to din 12 should be ok, huh?

Alpine bindings = quitting. Yes. I’m a Puritan. And I’m a tough-guy.

definitely go for the sploders, they rock
180 or 190 for sure. size depending on terrain you want to ski
12 din will be fine
if budget wasnt an issue, id say just get some stiff 179 bros.

You may end up rather liking the fixed heel thing ;) Yeah thos mtnlion exploders sound great. I may have some SAC axial 140s left over if you want to spend that much.

I really want some 186s, just dont need to spend anymore money right now.
Im pretty sure Id make that dedicated everyday alpine setup and put dynafits on my explosivs. Of course Id still have the snowrangers for rocks, but that doesnt count.

flame bigs/arnos
I rock the arnos for my everyday tele sticks and a set of old flames for my novelty boards. Very different depending on application but still very fine skis (and if you don't like alpining they're great hippy sticks)

I've seen some cheap flame big's around, those would be cool or the mis-matches explosivs. I should add I want to spend as little as posible on this alpine setup. I got the boots from MassLiberal for free, and It looks like I can get some skis cheap, now I need some cheap foot clamp thingys. Are they going to cost twice as much as tele binders because I'm getting the whole binding, not just the toe piece?

I spent exactly 50 on my setup....all that on some flame bigs (shipping incl from Splat) free bingings form Marshal and some free boots from somebody who's name I can't remember. Put up a WTB for really cheap alpine bindings.

There aren't a whole lot of skis I've gotten on and just gone "wow" before but it applies to those.
I needed a spring hiking ski so I went ahead and put freerides on mine. But I've been sooooo tempted to buy another pair just to stick some alpine binders on them.

At only a buck fitty, and just starting alpine, you should be able to go with a 10 DIN. Heresy, I know. But the reality is, I way more than 50 pounds more than you, I've skied alpine, and only alpine, for 30+ years, and I still set my DIN at about 10.
There's a significant price delta between 10s and 12s.
You could also split the difference and go with a new pair of Mojo 11s, asssuming that Evogear is still clearing them out for $60 or $70 -- that would give you clamps you could reuse as you move up the normal, er alpine, food chain.
