View Full Version : Summit 07 Poll: SWCO to Aspen or Vice Versa?

Max Gosey

Should the Summit start in the front range and then move to Aspen for the first half of the week, and then end in SWCO (Telluride, etc.) or should we instead start down yonder and do SWCO first and then do the second long weekend at Aspen?

From what I understand from Buster's post, it's thursday Silverton either way.

My ideal itinerary looks like this (or something like this... I don't know that much about the individual Aspen resorts, other than that I'd like to use a full 4-pack during the Summit).

3/24 Saturday Vail
3/25 Sunday Ajax
3/26 Monday Highlands
3/27 Tuesday Snowmass
3/28 Wednesday Highlands ---> drive to SWCO
3/29 Thursday Silverton
3/30 Friday San Juan Snowcat day---> drive to TELLURIDE (fixed)
3/31 Saturday Telluride
4/01 Sunday Telluride
4/02 Telluride/CB/I don't care cuz I'm not gonna be there (somewhere in SWCO, though)

PLEASE ONLY VOTE IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON ATTENDING (doing otherwise wouldn't make much sense, but that doesn't mean it's ruled out. ;) )

Governments fall from sheer indifference. Authority figures deprived of the vampiric energy they suck off their constituents, are seen for what they are: dead empty masks manipulated by computers. And what is behind the computers? Remote control. Of course. Don't intend to be there when this shithouse goes up. Nothing here now but the recordings. Shut them off, they are as radioactive as an old joke. (Look at the prison you are in, we are all in. This is a penal colony that is now a Death Camp. Place of the Second and Final Death.) Desperation is the raw material of drastic change. only those who can leave behind everything they have ever believed in can hope to escape. (William S. Burroughs)

Heh. He-heh.

Not sure I understand, Buster. Either of your posts...

Hey Max, not quite sure if this is what you meant, but I think so:

Sun-Wed = Aspen
Thur = Silverton
Fri-Mon = SWCO

VS:

Sun-Wed = SWCO
Thur = Silverton
Fri-Mon = Aspen

Just trying to keep the choices simple without getting bogged down in the daily details...

Post #1 is a Burroughs quote regarding indifference with regard to decision making, like voting.

Post #2 points out that we might be driving to Telluride the day after snowcar skiing instead of driving to Aspen after SM and before snowcat skiing.

Capiche?

Damnit.

Yoss, that's exactly what I meant.

And Buster, I missed the bold. (And the beautiful).

I'm about to put in credit card information for Silverton, and I haven't yet seen a place to put in a password. Should I try back later, or is it on the confirmation page?

I think there's a comments block somewhere in there.

If not, hold off until I get it straightened out.

Just to clarify, as far as I can tell, the rough itineraries go like this:

Top option: Aspen to Silverton to Telluride/SWCO

3/24 Saturday Vail/Frontrange ---> drive to Aspen
3/25 Sunday Aspen Ajax
3/26 Monday Aspen Highlands
3/27 Tuesday Aspen Snowmass
3/28 Wednesday Aspen Highlands
3/29 Thursday Silverton (guided)
3/30 Friday San Juan Snowcat or BC day
3/31 Saturday Telluride
4/01 Sunday Telluride ---> drive to Vail/Frontrange
4/02 Monday Vail/Frontrange

******** VERSUS *********

Bottom option: Telluride/SWCO to Silverton to Aspen

3/24 Saturday Abasin/Frontrange
3/25 Sunday Frontrange/Vail ---> drive to SWCO
3/26 Monday Telluride
3/27 Tuesday Telluride
3/28 Wednesday San Juan Snowcat or BC day
3/29 Thursday Silverton (guided)
3/30 Friday Aspen Highlands
3/31 Saturday Aspen Ajax
4/01 Sunday Aspen Highlands (closing day at Highlands)
4/02 Monday Aspen Snowmass ---> drive points north/east

I really love that bottom option!

Gets you into SWCO to check out the local conditions before going cat skiing and backcountry skiing at Silverton, and gets you into Aspen over the long weekend; at Highlands on a Friday spring day (bump bash!) and at closing day (also a good thing), and allows a good party finish and ends closer to home for both the Denver bound people and SLC bound people...

I prefer the top just because I'd rather ski the Aspen areas on a Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday then on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And I'd rather ski Highlands on a not-closing day, since I'm not going to have a pass (i.e., if I'm paying, I'd rather ski the area than spend time with the festivities, which one could do without paying money but with spending a day. Which I don't want to do, if you catch my drift.)

Also, unrelated to the pole in question, I'd suggest leaving the Aspen days just as "Aspen Areas" and not specifying a location-- snowfall and conditions can vary pretty significantly between them and maybe this should be more game-day.

Also, if folks are dribbling in over the week, it's easier to dribble in to Aspen than down to the Southwest. When it's all done, the same miles will be driven/flown, but flying in to Denver and driving seven hours straightaway to Durango is a bruiser.

Dribble on....

I agree with the slack-jawed one. Telluride is gonna make for a long trip for those people who have to get home for work on Monday. And flights out of Telluride are $$$ compared to Denver or SLC.

Bah! If I have to, I'll just go to Utah first and then roll up to Silverton on Thurs... So I'm down for either, I guess.

There is, however, a USSA race in T-ride that week, so there's a possibility of getting some racer's tix. Not sure how many I can get, but I might be able to hook some people up if the dates coincide and if it's doable.

If one of you guys from LRC could send me a race schedule, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm seriously considering taking advantage of that United deal that's mentioned on another thread somewhere around here (LAX - Aspen), but my eyes are going round and round from reading all of these confusing threads. When is the summit? More specifically, when is the Aspen part of the Summit?

Not to confuse you too much more there YC, but don't forget to throw into the equation the said El Nino factor.;)
With that, I predict the SW Colo portion to be where it's at.

YC,

The Aspen part of the summit is being more-or-less being decided in this thread. I'd ignore all the other threads, at least for now. From what I can gather, seems summit week has pretty much been set (Mar 24-Apr 2), and it appears that consensus for the Silverton day is Thursday the 29th.

If you prefer the summit to hit Aspen from Sun 25th-Wed 28th, vote for the upper option on Max's poll.

If you prefer the summit to hit Aspen from Fri 30th-Mon 2nd, vote for the lower option.

If you want to try to influence others, post your preference - I'm sure you'll be able to convince at least a few folks who are teetering on the fence.

See post #10 in this thread for rough (i.e. not set in stone) itineraries.

Winning option will tell us the preferred setup, and will most likely become the semi- to fully- official schedule. Based on that, you can go ahead and buy your ticket.

Maybe Max ought to follow through on his threat to repeat this poll in the main forum, but this time hopefully he won't make it an anonymous poll - that way people will be able to see who prefers which itineraries, and we'd get a rough idea of the presumptive participants.

No love for Crested Butte?
I suppose it could fit in instead of the San Juan/BC or Telluride days, if people are willing to do the drive.

Obviously there are many variations, but personally, I'd jong it more like:

Den->S'ton->T'ride->CB->Aspen

or Den->CB->S'ton->T'ride->Aspen

Personally, I'd want to stay as far away from Easter as possible. But I can get a cheap(ish) flight for the first weekend of the summit, not the 2nd

It's gotta be quicker than driving but you have to backtrack after the bar closes to get your car. The equivalent of the "really far out there parking lot."

No resolution yet, cornholio. I am going to sit my lazy ass down (probably tomorrow afternoon) and peek at all the proposals. The best one will be chosen, and people will start booking. If there aren't enough in agreeance to book it up, we'll change the dates/accomodations.

A Jong question for sure. Never been to a Summit but I'm guessing we can fly in for a couple days because I'm tempted to come and hit Telluride only. I love that place sooo much...had an amazing time when I was there several years ago. My vote is to keep the Telluride days!

Wish I didn't miss the Summit last year since it was so close to home :frown:

Not that I am an expert because I only been to two with a total post count 7.

With that said yes you can show up for a part.
