Narvik / Riksgränsen... Well with public transport... I'd say about 30 hours :the_finge. And with a car around 20 hours... For moving around, Norway Sucks :fuckyou:.
If the push comes to shove, I might be able to take a few peeps from Oslo Airport to Stryn and back... And will be (most likely, if I can escape the firm I'll be doing my M.Sc. thesis onto) spending the Easter around Riksgränsen, Narvik and Lyngen:p

Hey guys, if you came to Narvik/Riksgränsen area, inform me also. I'm spending this season there. Well, actually living at Rovaniemi, but we are going to buy riksgränsen season cards and we will be there almost every weekend(probably mostly "long weekends" :) ). And definately everytime it snows. I can probably offer also cheap transportation from Rovaniemi to Riksgränsen or along the route, if you're interested. At least for couple of guys.

20-30 hours? what is the trip from Oslo to Stryn like? and how does Stryn compare with Narvik/Riks?
Ville

It's because there are no straight roads in Norway. If you want to go "fast" from southern Norway to northern Norway, you have to drive in Sweden. Norway has "too much" fjords and mountains. But if you come up here, you definately don't fly to Oslo. I don't know, if you can get cheap flights to Narvik or Kiruna, probably not. But you should be able to get rather cheap flights to here, Rovaniemi. It's only 5 hrs from here to Riksgränsen.
I haven't been in Stryn so I can't compare. But couple of pics tell more than thousand words :)
http://www.biglines.com/photosv2/2006/05/120x120/biglines_59968.jpg
Vàssecohkka. In Riksgränsen there are "just fjäls". If I remember right, from top of that fjäll it's about 900 vertical meters down.
http://www.biglines.com/photosv2/2006/04/120x120/biglines_57702.jpg
Rombakstrotta. This is from Narvik, lifts are behind that mountain. 1100 vertical meters.
Both places have good touring possibilities and but there's also good skiing near lifts.
Hemas can compare these places to Stryn :)

Well Stryn is smaller, when it comes to lifts (basicly two lifts... one to get half way and another to get to the top). There's more lift-served in Riksu/Narvik and almost endless touring (provided you're willing to do the approach :fm: ).
The Stryn thing, would be last week(end) of May or fisrt week of June... More than enough time to 1st visit Riksu and Scandihoolian Extreemo-comps and then drag that sorry ass to Stryn... Atleast I'll try to do both, provided my future employer will let my (which, I'll still have to find... I should be doing my M.Sc thesis for them).
Oh, and Stryn is around 4 to 6 hours from Oslo...
Sterling + Norwegian might offer a reasonably priced option to fly from NL to Narvik... (and flights from Schipol to Oslo, with Sterling were pretty cheap).

I said to my employer that I can't work from February to June, because I have to ski :the_finge
yep, I think we should do both :) For Riksu/Narvik, I'm definately in. For Stryn I'm in, if I still have money and there's no new snow up here.
At Riksgränsen we could take maggot accommodation from Katterjokk, it's only about 30e/night/person. It's much better quality than hotel's "budget"rooms and cheaper. There's own kitchen in every room, nice living room upstairs and sauna every evening. Maybe 100m to lifts. Like I said, I will be there almost every weekend, so maybe I could arrange accommodation things when we know whos coming?

Easiest option for you would be to take a flight to Oslo Int. Airport (Gaardamoen or what ever it was called) and either rent a car (like I did, last year) or take a bus to Stryn (I did that two years ago). If you're students, you'll get a good discount on the bus tickets (I believe it was -50 %, by just showing some kind of student card). Or you could try to hitch a ride from other maggots/peeps heading that way.
Most likely the grand opening is either the last weekend of May, the 1st of June or the weekend nearest to Ascension Day.

I've been to stryn in july in 2002.. was a great time.. good skiing, friendly folk, cute women... Its about 6 or so hours up the coast from bergen. I would have to say easiest way to get there is to fly into oslo and then fly to bergen and then drive. there are SO many tunnels on the way. I used to business with a guy from stryn and he took me there and to some of the local places.. we were in some other town as well.. was a great weekend. also in the winter theres norefjell, hafjell.. geilo and hemsedal. I ve been to the 1st three and not the last one.. good skiing.. had some super fun powder days!
I would be in for joining as well.. but I am much more keen on Narvik, I have heard many great stories, plus probably a more direct flight to get there from oslo... anyways, bump for my fav country in the world!

No need to switch planes in Oslo and fly to Bergen...
It's only 4 to 6 hours on a GOOD road to Stryn from Oslo (and ~45mins less from Oslo Airport).

Looks like flights can be had for under €100 if you get them right. I'd fly from Narvik back to Oslo around the 31st of May or June 1. When is Ascension Day for those of us non-Scandahooligans?

Nope, but busy.... Quite a few peeps are skitouring at that time (ie. Easter).
Actually atleast Narvik should be great in April... Still enough snow down low to ski to the road and also they should be running the lifts. Can't say for Lofoten, as I have never been there, but going to guess that the time of the year should be about spot on... Enough light to do long days and still a lot of snow.
Oh, but as far as I know, there are no lifts in Lofoten... But a lot of really nice lines, some of which have never been skied.
Enjoy, and take a lot of pics...
Oh, and if you have any idea on how to read/understand swedish, check this out: www.topptur.nu
They have a really nice guidebook with touring / ski-mountaineering routes around Abisko-Riksgränsen-Narvik, plus a few others (one for whole Norway and so on).
If you want, I can scan you a few pages from the Narvik-guidebook and area.

Some of the nice lines are just a short traverse from the top lift... Others demand ~30 mins to 1 h of skinning / hiking (the best, ie. Nuken). Basicly, unless it has dumped heavily... You better be prepared to hike some, to keep it interesting for longer than a day.
Numerous other nice lines nearby, but no lifts to assist.

FWIW Stryn is currently recording snow levels that seems to approach best ever levels. Yep, lifts are few, but the possibilities are endless.
I would gladly swap 2 months of great La Grave winter skiing for the two best months of Stryn season in the best years. For the record, getting from Stryn to Narvik, is easiest done by booking a cheap flight from Trondheim (for which it's a ~4 hours bus ride from Stryn) to Narvik/Fagerness (or something like that) Airport and then ~1h bus to Narvik... Riksgränsen is ~1 to 2 hours bus-ride further.

Well, to Stryn just get the express bus if noone is driving up that weekend. If it opens this weekend I probably know a load of people driving up; make sure to remind me later to try and find a free seat in someones car for you. I don't think I'm going myself though - will probably be at a windsurf racing camp that weekend.
Honestly if the season shapes up like it seems to (and provided the road authorities manage to find the road under the snow somewhere so the resort can open) I would suggest to just hit Stryn for a week. Opening weekend if people everywhere, a bit of a line and generally a little bit stressed out (though GREAT too) - but the real $$$ days tend to be Monday to Thursday after opening weekend when 70% of the crowd are back at work. Hitting Narvik/Riksgränsen too will mean a lot more travel and stress and cost you at least two days of skiing I guess.

Since I'm a Norway jong, I have no idea what snow conditions we could expect (though I saw the comment in the thread about this being a good year) and what kind of terrain there is - a Google search comes up with precious little. Terrain (with a bit of skating or walking from top lift) should be compared to a winter resorts, not a flat and soggy glacier in the Alps. There are definately lines that require you to bring your A game. Everything from open glaciated areas to steep and technical couloir skiing. A lot of the skiing does not happen on the actual glacier; due to the massive snow coverage (there are rumours of levels approacing 15 metres on the glacier; the two storey building with antenna on roof at the base is gone) a load of terrain is skiable. Many lines start out as open fields at season start only to melt into couloirs and tech stuff later on. Snow can be anything from powder (happens in June every now and then) to perfect creamy butter. No, it's not like skiing is over come noon. On the contrary, certain tours and road runs are perfect when the lift has closed and one has rested a bit. I've done quite a few tours at like 8-11 PM over the years.

Driving from Gaerdamoen to Folven (nearest camping to Stryn summerski) is about 4 hours, or mebbe a bit more or less...
Folven Camping (http://www.strynefjellet.com/) has some huts/cabins and also ample room to set-up tents... Also this is the place where the party will be (and they have a nice bar... Powder Cafe), as well as the possible transport to the summerski resorts.
Even closer to the summerski is Hotel Videseter (http://www.videseter.com/english/index.php?page=index), they also a nice restaurant... No idea on the pricing though...
Then further away from Stryn summerski, there is atleast 3 or 4 other camping grounds (with huts/cabins) before the town of Stryn.
If peeps want to hook up, they should start PM me their cell# and I'll collect them and make a nice list of 'em to share (either via PM, or I'll put them up somewhere protected).

The route doesn't start before June 1st, so it's too late for the Stryn opening weekend, but Londoners should take note of the new London-Ålesund connection which is being opened by SAS (flights every monday and friday after June 1st, IIRC).
Ålesund is quite a bit closer to Stryn than Gardermoen (like a 2 hour drive), not to mention the even better touring possibilities between Ålesund and Stryn, i.e. Sunnmørsalpene.
Western parts of Norway are being hit by cold fronts from NW now, this should provide even more snow to the already good coverage at altitude. Hopefully it will stay a while, even if temperatures should rise to levels higher than normal (like it has been throughout the winter).

As posted, Teletori and Scottyrottan are sure to be there... I'm still in the limbo, but pretty certain to make my appearance (taking pics & drinkin'... The knee is not going to take skiing). I also beleive Tri-U has booked his flights, so he should be there as well.

OK. pulled the trigger... Will arrive on the evening of 23rd and bail out on the 27th.
As stated earlier, won't be skiing (fuggin' ACL+meniscus) but will most likely hike with snowshoes and shoot pics plus drink beer and act as the usual Scandihooligan I am.
irbis & horizon, you have PM.
Mrs.jk and me will be there from May 25th until 3rd of June. We will ski the resort and party at Folven on the first weekend, then move camp up the valley and possibly focus on touring for a few days before the Freeline Jam comp.

Well Irbis and I are still in, coming with a third chap and his son.
I've done my absolute best to bring with me two beauties from work. They bailed when they realised they'd have to drive 400 miles each way for three days.

Oh, and here's the weather forecast that is actually near the resort (top of Nuken ~1800m)... Looks like some soft snow is to be had...

No need to hate me... I can't ski... But you should hate my cousin and a bunch of the Norwedgian Maggots (Scottyrottan & Teletori and their pals) as they will be skiing:p.

OK... The Mini was sort of an success...
A great deal of snow was available higher up and a few maggots made it there (plus some tele-wankers from TTips)...
The biggest grief was actually the snow... It had snowed so much that the actual resort couldn't open (avalance prone road), so hiking and touring was the name of the game.
The weather was quite shifty, going from a full blown blizzard to baking in the sun with just boxers on...
Some pics and TR's will be published due sometime in the future...
Maggots present:

plus one other that MAY want to remain unknown... so I won't out him.
All in all, the party @ Folven/PowderCafe was amazing, and the amount of really expensive beer consumed at said party (from Thu to Sun) is staggering.

I was there opening weekend, believe I left monday 28th or 29th(not sure of the date). Had my bit of fun, but the only thing that pissed me off a bit was the road never opening(at least not for the public). Some driving had to be done, Saturday towards Geiranger, at Djupvasshytta, for a little hiking and a kicker session, and Sunday just past the two first tunnels out of Strynefjellet, for the greatest fun I've had since the end of april, also a kicker session.
Great fun, food and drinks all around.
Anyone planning to go the weekend after this?
Edit: I'll be there from sat. 16th of JUne till at least sunday 24th. Then maybe moving on to folgefonna.
Cheers!

Sunday just past the two first tunnels out of Strynefjellet, for the greatest fun I've had since the end of april, also a kicker session.
You parked near the entrance to the 3rd real tunnel (not the short avy-"shed")?
I might have seen ya, and if I wasn't there, Tri-U and Teletori were...
Anyway, some inside knowledge...
I know where the key to the Stryn Summerski road is, and we did use it to drive to the resort on Thu... Alas they wouldn't let us use the lift and it was in the clouds, so no hiking... Got even yelled at from the Mesta-Snowblower guy... Good thing he doesn't speak much english and even the the norwegians acted like foreigners:D..
BTW. the official reason for not opening the road was too much fresh snow and really high avy-danger above it (if you've been there, you'd know). I'm pretty sure it was the right call...
Anyways, mebbe we'll see ya next year (of during Easter in Lyngen/Tamok/Rikdgränsen/Narvik).

That might've been us, Hemas. Or not. I remember exactly where we were located now. You know the little bridge over the glacial river just between real tunnel 2 and 3? We were right up that hill. There had been a little avy there, but it felt as if it happened two days or so before we got there.
We were mostly snowboarders, but one or two skiers as well. We had this great little wu-tang pop kicker; you could do anything on it and still not get hurt. Err. My friend Thomas landed on his neck after a fs720 attempt, which sucked a bit, he said. Other than that, I saw there were several others who had built small jumps, and even rock jibs closer to tunnel three.
I'll see you easter, moving to Narvik and all in august=)
How's Riksu in the spring, by the way?

Yep, saw those guys on our way out on Sat...
Most likely missed you guys, since we always started skinning from the entrance of the 3rd tunnel.

Riksu is often pretty good, but you should as Ville about it... I've only been there once during Easter two years ago, where Ville seems to be there about every weekend :D.
Oh, and if you don't already have it, get the Topptur Narvik-Riksgränsen-Abisko -book (www.topptur.nu)... It has some great lines, and I defo want to ski a few of them... S-cooler on Rombakstrotta should be sweet...
(can you spot the line?)
