Totaly kayak jong post here, but I've got all that noob excitement and wanted to share...
--------------
Well, after four years out of boats since college, I'm finally a kayak owner. Picked up a Dagger Super Ego, a Seven2 paddle, a helmet, sprayskirt and drytop for...wait for it...$500. Super stoked. Took it out last night to an eddy behind a friend's house and I remember how to roll, so I'm back in the saddle!
Any JH mags with experience willing to show me the local spots? Sixers are on me. And I should have my hand-roll back soon, (had a bomber one back in 2002) so I shouldn't be too much of a pain...

Cool!
I have no experience on the water, but I've been thinking about getting into it. Had no idea how much it would cost to drop in...is $500 superdupercheap for that setup? How much could a guy with no hookups in that arena expect to pay?
Enjoy the time on the water!!!

$500 is reasonable to get everything you need.
The easiest way is to have friends that paddle or join a club. Most people have old shit laying around you can either use or have until you figure if you like it or what type of gear you want in the long run.
Oh, and look at the 20% coupon in gearswap for STP and then do a search for the Lotus Lowrider. That's about as cheap as you will find a pfd new or used.
