July 4th is approaching us, folks. How many people this year plan to get up/down to Mt. Hood this year for the 4th?

It's either that, or ski Mt. Shasta. I need a plan! :)

there are currently plans for the crinkle clan to be in Portland for July 4th and it wouldn't be difficult to bring skis along. Consider the arm twisted and me there.

I think there's a definite chance of getting some of the Seattle crew down.

Myself included, although the 4th is on a tuesday, so I could probably only make it down for the weekend. Who knows?

Might want to put this in the main forum.

I'm doing a Cascade Volcano tour around that time. Only definite plan so far is an Adams attempt July 2nd, so I'll be in the area, 4th a Hood sounds better then trying to beeline it back down to Mammoth.

Looking for partners to climb other Cascade Volcanoes around that time too.

GRRRRREAT! Sounds like a plan then. Lego and I are in! We'll be taking the long way up along the 395 from Reno, and stopping in Monument, OR to visit a friend. I look forward to meeting Altachic and her people, and hanging out with R and Fiddler again. And all'y'all.

Shasta 6/29,6/30, 6/30?

That would probably work for me, I'll be tooling around the Cascades. I have to warn you, I'm not having much luck with the weather at Shasta, just got back today from my 3rd attempt in 3 years, weather has turned me around all three times.

But I'm determined to make it up this year, I'll just keep going until the weather cooperates.

Hotlum-Winthum Ridge would be my first choice, but not sure if the road will have melted out by then, 14 miles right now. Avy Gulch via Horse Camp base camp and the West Face via Hidden Valley are the two routes I've tried, it was snowing and windy when we woke up in Hidden Valley this AM. I've been thinking of just a one day push from Bunny Flats too, may climb Avy Gulch then ski the West Face.

Also, the road through Lassen isn't expected to open until MID-JULY this year! I drove into the park this afternoon, it's open up to the Devastated Area. You can ski right from your car there, lots of snow. No car shuttle option for the summit right now. It was raining and I saw enough bad weather this weekend, so I didn't stay, headed back to Tahoe.

If any maggots were in town and needed to borrow some sticks send me a PM and you're welcome to borrow what I'm not using in my quiver (http://www.vanillawinter.com/skis.jpg).

Other than that I can name a few good places to drink and give rides as well (I still have ski racks on my Jimmy).

Hood would be fun....haven't been there in 2 years I think?

But hard to justify driving that far from NorCal when Mammoth will be open too. Plus Mammoth will have MUCH more interesting terrain and longer runs to ski if it's anything like last year. If I ski on the 4th it will be at Mammoth.

Friends
It would be great to get down there again and see everybody. I've missed out the last two years at Hood but did make the mini at A-basin last year. The skiing, partying, laughing, camping, Trainvein literally crashing a party, the madness of MD9 and brother meat, the generousity of GT40, and Nattys deck have provided good times and great poeple. Due to new employment, I can only make to Hood the 6-9 of July if that works for anybody. Let me know if that weekend works and I'll set up the camping and other details if needed.

I would be great to see the maggots again.

bdog, last time I was there (2 or 3 years ago), most of the maggots camped at a camping area that was basically opposite the turnoff to go up to Timberline. I had no reservations, and didn't have any trouble getting a spot - I just slept in my car so all I needed was a place to park. I think it was like 8 bucks a night.

Will Natty D make it over? Are we gonna do a 4th rager somewhere? It'd be fun...

I may eviscerate any shred of cred I ever had, filet my magnionness in this admission, in a word.

But we've been camping for about 3 months. The kitchen remodel is ongoing. The old kitchen sink sits awkwardly on sawhorses in the backyard. Meals are cooked on that little 2 burner propane stove on the deck. Water is obtained from the downstairs bathroom. Spousal spats arise when discussing whose turn it is to scrub the spaghetti ring out of the toilet. Making dinner is running laps from the deck to the bathroom and garage storage, extracting foods from plastic bins, tracking down cutlery, soap or salt. Cleaning up is war time.

The dryer is a joke, and the washing machine a failed joke: boardlike clothes dangle like drying fish in most available spots. The refrigerator is really an icebox posing as an electrical appliantological apology. O how the wee ones have howled at the loss of several hotly anticipated pints of Ben and Jerry's Vanilla. Lettuce whines and wilts, broccoli laughs and blooms. Death ether of lost vegetables haunt the bins and damp racks.

The sale of the old house went sour with some prancing flipper wannabe wheeler deeler. So all of out furniture is at the old house. Life is lived on futons and lawn chairs. Not exactly relaxing. No tv, just got dsl, lots of hours of reading books to the kids, rumpfling their hair and buns, sneaking down for an hour of gleaning some amusement from a page or two while the tykes nap upstairs in secure bliss.

The wiring is done, floor joists drilled, wires run, switches wired by my awesome wife, lights wired and ready to be installed. Low voltage is in, with phone, compooper network and speaker wires wound in and out of headers, joists and studs. The knotty pine ceiling is in, the result of coming home for the last 2 weeks and whacking tongue and groove together overhead. The resulting neck kinks may never leave. Thanks to z-bo for help with the drywall. Other than that, we've done it all ourselves. Ripping out an old wood floor tr000000000leeeeeee sux: slow, hot work.

But we think our first hand labors are at end. The new oak floor was installed last Friday BY SOMEBODY ELSE. Soon it will be sanded and swamped by toxic bacca and glitza, making the new pad uninhabitable for a few days.

So I rented a room at Timberline Lodge. A nice room. One where I expect my toes to be soaked in sauternes and foie gras while hotel staff peel me a grape. I will be found on the hill, by the pool or in the bar. I will buy drinks in the bar. See you there.

Pretty sure that is correct. T-Line makes a bundle of the many camps and an excess of public only competes for space on a limited amount of terrain. And .... they're the only game in town.:frown:

What bdog said. the good news is the racers usually pull up stakes and ship out around 10-10:30-11, as the snow turns to corn. The lifts open at 7, but you don't want to be up there then - lots of racers, and they salt the runs overnight so they freeze to hardpack. It begins to improve after 9 really.

Looks like I won't get out of Bellingham until around 10 or 11pm. I'll be playing the fiddle and killing mosquitos with my bow at the same time up in Maple Falls til around 9. I won't bother with the campground, just the usual pull into the T-line Lodge parking lot and crawl in back of the wagon for a few hours of sleep. The next move is to try to score tickets from the race campers as they get passed out before heading for the lift. This has never worked before, I need a better line.

This was more like a micro-mini! I didn't leave Bellingham until 1am, arrived at 7am in the parking lot. No time for sleep with the lifts opening at 7:30. I started talking with a guy a few cars over, turned out to be bjtuna from Boise. While I was getting ready to put my boots on a big thundershower opened up on us. It didn't last long though, got up the lift betweem 8 and 8:30. bj bagged it after awhile to go hiking and I stayed and hoped to find someone else. I heard my name called from the chair and it was BobMc. We skied for awhile and when Bob went in I decided to stay til my legs gave out. Never did see Buster.

Skiing was unspectacular but fun. Skied all the way to the bottom of the Magic Mile chair one time and at the end of the day all the way to the parking lot. That was the most memorable run of the day. Getting close to the bottom there were lots of butterflies getting blown across the run. They were bouncing off me and I had to keep my mouth shut to keep from swallowing one. It was very cool. I didn't have a camera but bjtuna has some video of him I took with his camera.

At the end of the day I went to the campground and hung out with BobMc and family. They are really nice folks. On the drive back I made it as far as Federal Way before I needed to sleep at the rest area for an hour. Got home right at midnight, a 23 hour excursion that has taken me a couple days to recover from. No sleep from getting up at 9:30 Saturday until that hour at the rest stop, then 5 hrs before going to work Monday morning. I don't seem to be able to abuse myself that much without more recovery time than in the past.:D It was worth it though. Too bad there weren't more maggot sightings though.
