The Numbers (first time, first thoughts)

Curious too others expierience the first time they ran Numbers.

i got too expiereince it last year only having run things like the gorge or browns when i was younger. Numbers definaltey opened my eyes to how powerful and fun the rivers can really be. It also scared me shitless a few times, especially at number 5 because i wasnt aware of the drop off :eek:

I ran the numbers for my first time in a G-Force 6.1. I think it was running at 2000 cfs. It scared the shit out of me too. I hit all the holes on #2 and was completely exhausted by the time I got to #5. I knew that the drop was there on 5 but I was so tired that I missed the move right above the drop and got flushed over the steeper part on the left of the drop. Long story short I swam and hit every fucking rock in that part of the river. I hit a rock so hard I think I may still have a contusion. Anyways, after that it got substantially easier for me. The last run I took down it I was trying to wave wheel down #4. See you up there this spring.

It sounds like your starting to work your way up a bit. I would recommend adding Pine Creek onto that run. It makes the trip longer and there is some fun stuff in there if you don't mind the big man-eating hole that you have to avoid. :biggrin: That can always be portaged too.

i think we did do the last run of pine creek i cant remember the name, but they took us too a pool and let us look at it before we went... it did have a huge hole in it

what other rivers should i look into for early summer calls V+ rafting... im still not a kayaker (YET!!!)

You would have known if you did the Pine Creek run or not. It's a step up from the Numbers. None of that is V+ though. PC has one class V in it and the Numbers is a solid IV.

If your just paying your way on commercial trips and want to step it up a bit, I would recommend Gore Canyon (flowing at a nice big water level right now) or the Black Rock section of Clear Creek when runoff starts.

im headed to jackson to get settled in now and get ready for next snow season, but after the 2006-2007 season im looking to work for ART or 4 corners to really get into it.

im pretty sure it takes a few seasons to get up to being able to guide that stuff (river miles or hours?) but i definaltey want to start learning to kayak this summer up in WY if i can find a place close enough thats got good learning potentiol... any reccomendations bro?

Living in Jackson, you have no excuse not to paddle a TON. Alpine Canyon of the Snake has tons of play all summer. If that's too tough at first, there are plenty of other sections. Do you have the gear already?

The snake is a great place to learn - if its too burly, go up hoback a bit and start off there. Get yer roll dialed on at the Wilson Rivera...

nope no gear... but im living cheap and strictly only spending money on that kind of thing(see also: mtb,snowboard,rock climbing gear), so i will prolly shoot for a fairly cheap beginner setup

The Numbers is Gerber. It is the easiest class IV I have found in the state. Hope this helps. :)

Is there any play-and-park in or around Jackson? I wouldn't mind driving up that way to do a little paddling.

King's Wave, Taco, Autospin, Big Kahuna, and Lunch Counter. It all depends on the flow so I would get ahold of SRKS and see what's going. Most of the stuff is in Alpine Canyon so it is a little drive from Jackson.
