I just signed up for the forum after reading it for a while. I will be going to AK for the fourth (and possible final time :( ) around june 13th. My bro has a Piper Supercub tricked out for bush landings but no skis. I don't remember seeing much snow at all (none?) in july, but i was wondering if there were any BC snow left to throwdown some turns in june, or even build a jump and throw down some tricks (yeah right). My bro lives in palmer so i would be near the chugach mountains, and somewhat near the alaska range. I won't be disappointed if the answer is no, but any answer would be great. I just think it would be cool even if there were a couple hundred feet on a glacier or something, it would a awsome to ski around on in a t-shirt and make for some good pics.

There is plenty of snow in June. Look up Kings and corn in the search and you will find what you can get here in June. Lots to be had year around it just gets more difficult to get at it the later in the summer you go.

alyeska has camps too
thompson pass aka valdisease is probably your best bet at that time of year
good luck

sry, i forgot to mention that my bro lives in Palmer. that's like an hour north of anchorage. and he has friends in talkeetna where he used to live. that's why i said chugash or alaska range
just to add:
i was hoping maybe my bro could land near a glacier that is skiable and i could hike up it

I would say if he has wheels and the snow was hard you could just land on a glacier high up somewhere couldnt you? make sure he doesnt come in and land when its soft though or you could both be in a world of hurt. other than that landing on the ground anywhere near a skiable glacier would probably be pretty tough, ie steep and bumpy. On another note I have had sustained 2000ft descents of 45 degrees in hatchers pass 15 minutes north of palmer in june :)

nope, no landing in snow no matter what. I've been to hatchers pass in july but i didn't see snow, how far do you have to hike? just up the main trail? you hike up 2000ft at 45 degrees? hot shit

Yeah, guys land on firm snow quite often, but it's a gamble, especially in AK where the snow tends to be good 'n deep and stay that way for a while. Not worth the risk without skis or 31" Bushwheels. Those are some decent sized wheels on the 182 in the pic below.

my bro has at least that big, like 33. but u still can't do it. drop ur car on snow at 30 mph. it won't be good what happens. i've even seen helocopters with skis just to keep them from sinking, even though they're not moving around.

It depends on the snow. Powder, no way. Crust layer on deep snow no way. Crusty spring glacial snow, if it's firm, yeah. Of course I've never actually done it, I just read what the Super Cub guys in the forum write.

Hope you have fun up there. I would really like to take a spring vacay to AK one of these years.

yeah by july it is pretty melted out a lot of times but it all depends on the year, this year is actually a pretty low snow year in hatchers so far, so maybe there wont be much of anything in june, but you never know, the 2000ft chutes in june were a 10 mins walk from the parking lot.

don't want to burst your bubble but there are no 2000' 45* chutes at hatcher's and there will definitely not be any in June. But there will be snow there if all you are looking for is some nice photos. April bowl is easy access. If the Archangel Road is open a trip back to the glaciers will get you some turns. North face of pioneer will have some snow. You can land on the snow with wheels but that is your friends call he will know what he is comfortable with. Have fun

maybe not 45 the whole way, but marmot mountain has steep consistent lines that hold snow late.

can u put a link on google maps or something? i'm familiar with hatcher's pass, but very little of it
pioneer peak had some snow on it in july, but it was up really high, really steap, and then down to a road. not sure how much difference that full month makes, but i don't remember any snow in hatcher's

a don´t do glacier or snow landing if you are no pro at it or you get 100 % loss of crew and vessel
b i got connections someone said I could get free helis if i get the balls to call and ask and they mean it I would be in maybe someday also thought about getting Royal Denship to lend me an arctic able exploration yacht and someone to sponsor it and head up there and fly from the boat but both cases i got to call but freak skiier may be welcome to join the crew
