View Full Version : To tap or not to tap .......

When i mount skis, i tend not to tap them in the normal way.
I usually drill the holes and then slice down the crowns created to get a flat surface.
I then take the bindings and screw them in 80% of the way and then back them out again. This tap leaves another crown that i then shave flat again before applying a drop of wood/gorilla glue and finally fully attaching the binders.
I tend to do this final shave to ensure a fully flat surface to mount the binders onto.
Is this method overkill or standard practice ?

Seems like a lot of work..... why not just tap?

I agree with Yooper. Though as with all things binder-related I'm curious what MarshalOlsen will have to say about it.

You can run a countersink over the holes so the topsheet won't buckle up.

overkill,
drill, tap if needed, shave once, glue and screw

The overkill shall cease.

Are you using a ski-specific bit? The drill bits I have are from Wintersteiger, and have a shouldered section that creates a countersink at the same time that the hole is drilled.

I haven't got the ski specific drill bits, only standard 3.6 / 4.1 mm drill bits. I could do my own countersink with a larger bit but i prefer not to take the risk a skating drill bit.
I'm trying to get hold of some ski specific stuff at the moment. Salomon UK are turning out to be very helpful which is nice.

when you order those jigs, have them hook you up with their bits.
