Whatever happens, i'm sure we'll hook up ..... What sort of skiing you going to be doing in the cham valley ? full extreme ski touring / mountaineering couloir destroying or slightly more sensible off piste mania with a bit of hucking ?

Someone at my work had booked a 2 bed / 4 person apartment in the centre of chamonix from the 17th to the 24th of January that they've had to cancel. They're allowed to transfer it into someone elses name. It cost them £800* for the week and i think i may be able to get it off them for a steal . It looks like a luxury pad.

Anyone here looking for a cham pad for a week / long weekend in this period ?

Here's the apartment.

I should be around the whole time. Look forward to destroying a few beers at the least. Wildstyle as the date approach why don't we set up a time/place to meet the first evening? Here's my Chamonix favorites:

Chambre Neuf (classic apres ski spot)
Elevation (after around 8)
Goofy's (after around 10)
MBC (after around 8 - micro brewery with snacks like hot wings, although kind of a hike)
Vegabond (after around 9 - also a bit of a hike though)
South Bar (after around 10 - Swedish chick central)
La Cantina (starts around midnight)

There's also the British ghetto places on the Bar de Moulins (Cybar, Bar'd Up, Queen Vics) although I'm trying to avoid them in my (failing) quest to learn some French / pick up Swedish girls....

Weather looks to be improving on the snowfall front. Here's hoping for a bluebird one day that week.

I'm not going to call the day until the Monday 23rd so i can get a good assessment of the weather or the week. I'm goiing to try and pick a good day for us ....

Shall we start discussing an itinerary ? Grand montet off piste mission ? vallorcine tree runs ? Maybe even do grands montet in the morning and vallorcine off piste / tree running in the afternoon ? we will have a range of abilities by the look of it so we need to keep the terrain varied rather that super hardcore ....

Beers sound good but i will be coming into chamonix for one day so it will be for beers in the evening after turns only .... When i/we call the day on the monday, we can firm up the beer drinking location ... ( south bar gets my vote for eye candy alone ..... i always feel old and ugly in there though :nonono2: .. l).

Just depends completely on the conditions so suggest you leave it up to the last minute. What I generally do is have my in-bounds pow day fun at La Flegere, then leave the sloppy lift accessable seconds to others and move on to the Midi runs, the way-off runs (Pas de Chevre, etc), and ski tours of varying lengths.

All subjective though. Idris is crazy about the Chamonix Shrubs for example and probably knows some stashes I don't.

I'm leaning towards thursday to avoid any crowds at all...

I'm making a guess that there will be no powder inbounds at all so most of the main areas will be boiler plate pistes by then ...

The weather should be good if a little cold so a mer du glace mission and/or a bit of touring looks to be the order of the day. If so, we're going to need some locals to show us the way...

i have never skinned in the cham valley , only alpined there ... i have touring equipment and a mellow skin in the sunshine would be nice ....

I'm still hoping for a mad snow dump to happen but its looking less and less likely.

Glaciar tours including Vallee Blanche still need a little more snow for the General Everybody although it is possible and could be nice if it snows signifigantly more. Requires a signifigant amount of gear rental all around and the guide assumes quite some responsibility... but if the weather and conditions pan out I can lead you all on a non-glaciated ski tour or at least point you in the right direction. Just have to see what the skies bring!

It's looking like I might miss most of you out there (other than beers hopefully) due to my departure on 26. I almost hesitate to list the equipment i am bringing but i don't relish going thru the rental scene and don't wish to get left behind. I also don't have time right now to send a bunch of pms..maybe later. I say I hesitate because other than trekkers and skins my experience with said equipment puts me in newbie territory (notice lack of jerk off). If my host cannot spend all his time entertaining me (and after two days he may find reasons not to:) ), then i will be in search. My list so far is this: Da kine Frontier pack
BCA tracker beacon
Trekkers and skins
BD crampons
Raven pro axe
Probe
Shovel
Explosivs

My host is suggesting renting a international cell phone...anybody do this?

I'm doing my snow dance... hope to catch up.

bbirtle
01-17-2006, 07:15 AM
As far as the phone, you just need a tri/quad band phone and a geek to unlock it, then just buy yourself a prepaid SIM card for around $50 and plug it in, done.

I think if any touring does happen during this summit, it won't be the glaciated type so just bring the basic touring gear and avo stuff (and of course know how to use it).

It's snowing buckets now but keep dancing - the more the better.

If anyone is interested in this phone deal ( I heard ya bbirtle but i don't know any geeks to unlock anything and my phone is incompatible vintage)....i set it up thru verizon/WorldRoam...basically it will cost $52 for the six days I'm there($4/day and it cost $28 to have it shipped to me). All calls are $1.49/minute and any calls i receive in the states on my normal cell # will be forwarded free except for air time. I can't afford to be out of touch with a dad who is squeaking out his last years.
Seriously....never did text... don't know shit about it and am not shaving pennies on this trip.

bbirtle
01-19-2006, 05:41 AM
train07 - text messaging is the way to go in Europe, because it's like $0.25 to send one and usually free to receive.

As far as the unlock, if you're going to do international travel fairly often, try to get a tri/quad -band phone that supports SIM cards the next time you get a new phone. I think most of the mid to high end ones do. Then it takes 10 minutes in the nearest phone shop and $10-40 when you arrive in Country X to get a prepaid system and a local phone number. Won't work out much cheaper on this trip of yours, but if you stay a couple weeks on the next trip it sure will.

The bastard phone companies always "lock" your phone so that you can't change SIM cards though... so then you need to find a way to get it unlocked. Sometimes after you have the phone for a year they will unlock it for you, other times you can find somebody to do it for you, or search on the Internet.

Thanks Roo, but they seem to want $20 to unlock my Motorola V3 with their "special software via cable". Might actually take them up on the offer though next time I do some travelling...

Hey train07 and others in your situation, also a lot of cellular providers allow international roaming, although you might have to call them up to enable the option. I traveled in the US for a week roaming on Orange France and calls were around $0.50/minute. You just need a tri/quad-band phone for that.

Juat got an opportunity to log some time online. So Muchos Gracias to LITT for picking me up an giving a lift to Cham, and more gracias to Wildstyle for getting this done, and last but not the least to Redskea and Idris for letting me crash at their place...

And let's not forget the others we met for beers and food in the evening.

I had fun, even though the weather nor the snow wasn't that great.

Henkka

It was good to meet you too.

Thanks again to Redskea for the lift home when Petra and I were losing the will to live. Don't let the bawdy Brits get you down. F*** 'em and enjoy your season. Most of them can't ski for shit anyway.
