March 3-12. It sounds like most people will be hitting W/B the second half of the timeframe with more action at the Washington hills the first half.

I'm 100% in for Buster's Very Important Event at XTAL. Closer to the date I'll figure out a few days at W/B and/or other PNW mountains sometime during the summit.
I may show up for a day or two but it's right in between P.F.W.T. travel dates, so I can't commit yet.
Gee, it's been something like 4 years since I skied Whistler... that's bad.

I'm definitely in for both weekends, whether it be in Whistler or WA. Unfortunately, my time is limited- it's the same week my boss gets married back East (and her boss will also be at the wedding) which pretty much assures that I can't get any weekdays off as I'm left to run the office
But I'm looking forward to those weekend days ripping with everyone at WB!!!

I know the owner of this outfit
http://www.powderzoneadventures.com/powdermountain.html
I will look into a group discount package for cat-skiing. Who's tentatively interested?
I will also get hold of some restaurants for group dinners etc.
Having never been to one of these before I have no idea what other kind of organized activities take place.

There's really 3 level:
1) Help with finding transportation resources.
2) Help with finding lodging deals.
3) Organizing meeting places before and after skiing.
It's really just disseminating information. The rewards are usually free drinks and dinner.
If you could help out that would be cool. Request a sticky thread from Owens Never Sleeps and put this type of information up at the top of the thread. An alias could be created to help maintain that thread.
Thanks d00d. Any interest in coming south for 3/6-8 or so?

March 3-12. It sounds like most people will be hitting W/B the second half of the timeframe with more action at the Washington hills the first half.
I'm working some contacts to figure out group dinners etc.
For example I can get a group of up to 30 into a nice restaurant Val d'Isere for 3 course dinner for about 40 bucks each not including wine.
I can probably also get a group rate for the Mongolie Grill. A very nice place, not as swanky but awesome food.
I might be able to get group discounts on a cat trip too.
I know the dates are March 3rd (Friday) to March 12th (Sunday).
I need some input into when the summit people will be in Whistler.
I'll commit to organizing up to 2 group dinners but will need some ballpark figures of how many people will be there?
So when will people be showing up?
Who would be interested in a cat trip?
Who would be interested in dinner?
If interested in group dinner - expensive medium or cheap?
AM I going about this all wrong? Is it too early to herd all the cats? Or just plain impossible?

Lego is aggregating the various fecal matters and should be able to provide an excel spreadsheet with 3d shaders specifying this info.

I'm planning on being up there Friday and Saturday. I'd be interested in a cat deal on Saturday and dinner either night.

The only way to go wrong is to worry about actually trying to enumerate everyone. You've taken the sack of offering up your effort, let them come to you.

Way to step up LeeLau. Much better to have someone local do it.
As far as when to organize dinners/night stuff. Definately around the latter weekend (3/9-3/12) is the safest bet here as that when I think most people are going to be up in W/B.
I know my group will probably be in for a dinner. Although we do want to hit Sushi Village too and not spend too much on food this trip so two expensive dinners might get a little tight.
As far as the cat trip, DG and I will be doing another cat trip in Tahoe hopefully before the summit so that might be too much coin for us (unless its comprable to a lift ticket of course :D ).

Good for cat skiing and dinner(s). Staying at the base of Creekside (Legends). Looks like I will have the extra bedroom in the condo available. Two single beds.
Also be up there Feb 6-10 if anyone wants to do some turns.

Here's some of the terrain where they ski; I took the pics from a trip
The cost is $ 480 a person plus lunch and breakfast but I think I can get you guys a deal. The price drops a lot if I can get 12 bodies to fill a cat and drops even more if you can ski on Friday. 10,000 ft vertical.
The terrain is in an area called Cypress and Tricouni Peak about half an hour from whistler
http://www.leelau.net/2005/brew111205/brew250.jpg
Here's a panorama of the views to expect.

You can get alpine bowls or glades depending on conditions
It llooks like this but with about 3m more snow now

What's the Per Magnion price for 12 bods on Friday?
That's what Im trying to negotiate now. Its complicated because only 3 people have committed so far. I figure I can get it down to 300 bucks Canadian plus breakfast and lunch but that's what my buddy has said. His boss still has to OK it.

leelau,
how many runs does $300 bucks get you. also what can the guide guarantee us for terrain. our we allowed to ski what we want. are we allowed to hike to terrain we want if the cat doesnt take us right to it. or do we have to ski boring 30 degree open pow bowls which i could do by hiking to oboe.
one more question when do you need to know by
skieast

Lee,
I'm in, but I'm only there skiing Saturday 4th until Thursday 9th. Any day(s) during that time are good.

re cat skiing;
phil - honestly I don't know. I would hope they'll be fine with it but guides are usually antsy about clients wondering away so I'd have to say I doubt it but we could always ask. I've skinned into tricouni and had 7k days touring. If the runs they're thinking are what Im thinking then you're looking at 4 to 5 runs.
Mtnman - of course you can get a ride. That's not a problem. They meet at whistler anyway.
skieast - I'll try to figure it out but so far Im kinda dealing with airy-fairy numbers. Lots of time to figure this out I guess

Figure no, their insurance wouldn't cover clients going off on their own. And anyone who decided to wonder away from the group would cause the guide to clamp down totally, and then you would be skiing 30 degree slopes.
The 'secret' to cat skiing is to have a group of ripping skiers who listen and do exactly what the guide says. This makes them comfortable about taking you into terrain that could be sketchy if you wander outside the defined boundarys. Take off down a ridge that is outside where they wanted you to ski on an early run or end a run below, or a long way from where the guide comes out and you will pay for it the rest of the day. Guides do not have a sense of humour about things like that.

I know I've been a super-lurker/new guy round here for the past year, but figured this sounds like an absolute blast (after reading the stories from last year) and would love to ski with some of you guys, so I just pulled the trigger.
Flying outta Jerz Thursday the 2nd (arriving late) and I'll be there til Wednesday the 8th. I'm down for pretty much whatever, and am def interested in catting if its gonna happen while I'm there.
Got some friends that'll be there on the 5th, but I'm flying solo til then. If anyone has any ideas for cheap lodging I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
Oh, and for all the Cali mags, I'll be rolling thru Mammoth and maybe Tahoe after that with another dude (non-mag) til the 16th so if anyone is around gimme a shout.
Buster,
Put me on the list ..Xtal for sure and most likely up to W/B too.

I won't be able to get any decent pricing on cat skiing as there aren't enough comfirmed skiers.
What I will do is make reservations for restaurants on the weekends when people are going to be skiiing at more reasonably priced restaurants:
Friday - Zen Sushi
Saturday - Carambas
You can bet on eating for about $ 20 at each place w.o drinks etc.
I'll book a table of 10 for each place that night and if we have more then that you'll have to take care of yourself. Again without any input or numbers I can't make plans and can't expect the restaurant owners to cut me breaks. If I knew for sure that 30 people would show up on any of those nights I'd reserve a block but I figure the chances of getting that organized are slim to none.
I'll go up and ski wed, thurs, friday, sat so I can show people around. I'm pretty sure pow111 will do the same. pow is that ok with you? My wife will probably be along to kick some ass Canadian grrl style. Depending on conditions we may do the b/c thing in which case whoever is stuck inbounds is stuck inbounds.
I've talked Escape Route into lining up AT and tele and bc gear rentals with a bit of a maggot price - break.
If you want hookups for a bc guide or for Extremely Canadian or if you want to get a 2 for 1 deal for a Dave Murray Ski Camp lesson let me know in advance and I'll do that- its up to you to arrange that yourself.
You guys are coming at pretty much the peak of the season and its that expensive time of the year. I just can't get much of a deal without having numbers.
I can get discount ski rentals too at Snowcovers. Again pm me if you want that. They're in Village North.

Cheap places to stay fyi:
- book a giant condo via www.alluradirect.com
- Tyrol Lodge
- Youth Hostel over on west side Alta Lake
- Shoestring Lodge
- UBC AMS lodge
- Pacific Ski Club
- Sleep in car at Calcheak parking lot; or brandywine or north of town at Wedge Creek
Google it if you want contact info.
Cheap food:
- IGA in Squamish; Nestors is also decently priced; Creekside market is higher priced but conveniant

My nuggets of wisdom...
Travel:
This is a very easy trip to do without a car if flying into Vancouver...
-There is a shuttle that runs to whistler from the airport every few hours.
-There are also a bunch of limo services that are pretty cheap, and if split between 5 people or more is actually cheaper than the shuttle, and you can talk the driver into stopping at a liquor or grocery store on the way.
-For the super thrifty traveler, there is a shuttle that will take you from the airport to the greyhound station. Buses run from there to Whistler fairly regularly.
Flying into Seattle is decidedly the cheaper way to go
-I ended up not doing it this way because of convenience but when i was crunching the numbers it seemed to save quite a few pennies, especially if you have people to split the rental with.
-This thread has a good break down of how to get from SeaTac to W/B and how not to (starting on post #20), it also discuses the best way to buy booze.

Once you get to W/B in typical intrawest style everything is very close together, they have a good bus system and Taxi’s are reasonable enough. However in typical intrawest style everything is a cluster fuck of tourism

Tentative plans for me:
March 8 - Blackcomb; meet at Gondi in village at 815 and ski.
March 9 - Whistler; meet at Gondi at village at 815 and ski
March 10th - Tour in the bc - TBD. PM if you need to arrange for rentals from escape route. I will call them and let them know you guys are coming and you can then rent directly from them at a discount.
7pm - eat at Sushi Village in village (its on the 2nd floor above Blacks the pub) - I can get booths - will reserve for 12 people
March 11th - Tour in the bc - TBD.
7pm - eat at Carambas in village (close to main square in village) - will reserve for 12 people
March 12 - not sure since its a travel day for most of you.
Someone else wants to take up the slack of arranging for inbounds skiing meet and greet on March 10th and 11th pls step up.
General comments
--------------------------
- I don't even know if you guys need someone to show you around on the 8th or 9th.
- If its a large group then we;ll split up depending on ability and depending on whether there's enough locals willing to lend a hand. (SOMEONE PLEASE STEP UP?!?]
- If its inbounds I don't mind charging hard on steeps but Im no cliff-hucker so maybe follow someone else if you want that.
- I'm picking early meeting times and sticking to them because that's the best skiing.
- In the bc tours, I am not a guide - just a buddy OK? You'll need tranceiver, probe, shovel and know how to use them pls. If you're unsure I'd suggest practise beforehand
- Biggest comment; All of this changes if its powder days.

Not a local but I've put in at least 200 days or so skiing inbounds (and slightly out of same) over the last 15 years. I'm happy to show anyone who wants some of the mountain(s). I ski Whistler around 90% (my condo is at Creekside) so Blackcomb experts step up now.

I'll be skiing from the 8th through the 11th so I can show people around Whistler (I almost never ski on Blackcomb but I can fake being a guide). Since I'm driving up on the 8th I won't be in the village at 8:15am.
Since there's a lot of people coming and going I'd propose a lightboard meeting (at the Roundhouse on Whistler and Rendezvous on Blackcomb) at 12 or 1pm just to resync after lunch.
Radios would be good too but I've forgotten the standard maggot frequency.
I seems to recall it being: 5 13

Count me in for some or all of this. I'll definitely show up for the big weekend when the most maggots are there. I'll probably be sleeping in my van and bribing condo folks for opportunities to shower every third day or so, that will make the skiing and dining more affordable.
Happy hour in the white Toyota Van!

LeeLau,
Another non-cliff-hucker here. Just gone firm with my flights and hope to arrive in W/B around the 5th or 6th after a few days in WA and then ski thru Sunday. So hope to be around on 8th and 9th.
Would definitely be up for one day's bc; would need skis/skins rental; but got all the other gear and practiced searches quite a bit. However do not have training avi/snow condition knowledge (usually been guided in Europe). Which day to choose could leave til later to mesh in with conditions/other participants.
Could you put me down for both the meals on Fri and Sat?
Depending on price I could be interested in catskiing but seems like that idea was still-born?

a good alternative to cat skiing is getting heli dropped on Rainbow Mtn or some other nearby peak. if you fill the heli, its about $75 per person for one drop. drop in the am, tour a few glacier laps and ski out. I dont know the area well enough to guide. Lee????

I'll definetly tour Mags around inbounds and backcountry. Fri-Monday are the days I will be skiing both weekends.
So I'm stepping up. I personally always like bottom of Glacier chair on Blackcomb at 9 or 10.
Lightboard on Whistler at 9 or 10.
Whistler on Weekdays i.e. fri and mon.
Blackcomb on weekends.
I'll have my pass back by then too. Whoppee!
White giro full face with red jacket and bros. I'll be waiting at said places at said times to show people the goods -this involves potential backcountry so bring your gear, potential scare yourself stupid lines, and potential hucks.
I'm happy to meet and ski with new people.
So there ya go Lee, I'm stepping up.
Same disclaimer as Lee. If there's powder days (which hopefully there are) this all changes.
See ya at the Maggot summit.

toby - that's the local price and Im sure i could get that but I don't want to take a group of people I've never skied with all the way to Rainbow; the route back through gin and tonics and sproat isn't rough but it is a long day - sorry but too much responsibility. awesome athan. You can take everyone cliff-hucking. At some later date I'll put together some sort of schedule and places to meet for lunch etc. Usually Pikas at 11am is good for lunch as are meeting at the lightboards.
Im just throwing out times and ideas here people so pls feel free to chime in. This doesnt need to be too formal.
Also on the b/c gear; pm me if you want to rent some and i'll get you hooked up but its a good idea to do it in advance just in case the only b/c store in town gets cleaned out on all its gear by something like a big avvy class or whatever. Just trying to make sure everyone gets what they want.

I got one of those single bed rooms, probably shoulda gotten a bed in a 4 share, but didn't realize it was hostel-style where you could just get a bed, damn. If you get stuck for a place to stay lemme know - we could probably squeeze 2 people in there.

Thanks for the offer but you probably don't want me knock knock knocking at your door at 3 in the morning. Probably lift-access since valley touring is treed and its tough managing a group in trees. One way ticket is Can $ 39.
Will decide probably the day before whether to tour or stay inbounds as there's a series of storms supposed to come in.
