Sounds to me like a very bad idea, what say the maggots?

all probes do is get pushed into the ground and pulled back out.
since ski poles like the life-links are around the same thickness in the shaft as a probe and stand up to much greater abuse (with a few dramatic exceptions) than a probe should ever see, I don't think there would be any problem.

I have them and tried them out on some very heavy avy debris below Sentinel at Kirkwood (see below). They penetrated to ground with no problem. They would not penetrate refrozen plowed snow in the parking lot, but heaven forbid anyone is buried there.

Yeah, a really bad idea.
Life Link doesn't know what they're doing. BD either.

Maybe they should hire you.
You know, just to figure shit out and stuff.

???

The whole part of the Slide Zone is that BC Jongs like me can post stupid questions without getting smart-ass responses.

I guess you missed that part

I just thought since most maggots like aluminium shovels and dislike composite ones it would be the same for probes. I now have learned that that is obviously not the case.

I think they obviously work when new, or good companies would not sell them.

But, for me, with plenty of carbon fiber experience, I know for certain that any impacts with hard objects can cause hidden fractures that result in catastrophic failure later on.
if you are rough on your equipment and your probe is bouncing off the sharp edge of your metal shovel when you throw your pack in the back of the truck, I would rather have an aluminum probe.
YMMV
also, how much weight are you really saving?

i'd trust the carbon probe if i didn't use it for practice or any other uses. like coreshot, i'd probably replace mine every 2-3 years just incase. i don't notice the weight of my aluminum probe but then again, i haven't yet skied with a carbon.

Carbon poles still have an aluminum tip so they should penetrate as well as any aluminum probe. Also the outer layer of carbon is a protective layer, not a structural layer, so they should take pretty aggresive use. Aluminum probes will bend and kink easier than a carbon probe. But aluminum probes do have a proven track record.
