Load Bearing Vests

Anyone of you guys use the millitary style load bearing vests for stuff that you constantly need to get at while touring? I was thinking I could pick up one of the smaller/flatter vests and wear it under my shell...

Anyone try this?

Tangential, aside from food/water (jacket pocket & hydration tube), map/compass/altimeter (cargo pocket, jacket pocket, watch), what do you need to constantly get at while touring?

GPS, sunscreen and chapstick (I burn super easy,) talkabout, camera.

Some of this is stuff that I could carry in a backpack, but I get more/better use of out of it if it's more accessable (I'm thinking GPS and camera, for example...)

I also don't have a lot of pockets on my shell or pants.

For the Camera I use a Lowepro case that velcros to the backpack shoulderstrap(it's a P & S). I mainly ski with a pair of softshell pants that have a good cargo pocket that'll fit a map - and that I can stuff a hat & gloves in. My touring pack also has pockets built in the waistband. Come in handy.

This setup just screams GAPER. Notice the built in pocket protector for the pens. Little kids will be throwing snowballs at you if you wear this.

I'm sorry, but this thread is too fucking funny. I sure as shit hope you are kidding, Joshbu. I mean, I hear what you are saying, but what is wrong with cargo pants and pockets in your coat? I think if you have that much going on, you're going to miss the tour!

Items I carry and use frequently, and where I put them:

slopedope--right cargo pocket
compass--left cargo pocket
Copenhaagen--left cargo pocket
radio--radio pocket of my coat
topo--topo pocket in the Dakine.

Rev: I don't have that many pockets. I only have two small jacket pockets. Poor decision on my part, yes, but one of these things is cheaper than new clothes. I don't care what kind of geek I look like. I'm not nearly good enough of a skier for anyone to think I'm anything but a JONG anyways...

Got it. Well, not so concerned about how you look, but touring and skiing with all that stuff on your torso might be brutal. Check out www.fateclothing.com for some cheap, strong cargos.

joshbu, by the title I thought you were looking for a manzier. ;)

If I remember correctly from my military days the gear you have pictured is called TA-50. There are a million different attachments available for said item. I'd imagine you could pick that stuff up for not too much at any army surplus store (smith and eddies in Ogden might have something like that).

There's the LBE version too, which you should be able to find cheap since the LBV is the new stuff. I just don't remember it being comfortable enough that it ever occurred to me to wear it if I didn't have to... I'd rather attach things onto a regular pack or something.

I wear mine over the top of my Ninja suit. I put a ziplock baggie with *&*^% in it into one of the pockets one day and it took me a week to find it again.

Where touring in bear country, I use a shoulder holster. My particular model doesn't interfere with my pack. I have never felt the need to carry an extra clip but based on the gangsta types I've seen in the BC lately I might have to reconsider.
