??
Shop tech is doing me a huge favor by pulling my skis out of the back of the line and moving them to the front of the "to be mounted" pile so they should be mounted up for this weekends sunshine and 70 degree weather(antijinx).
what would be the proper gratuity
6 pack of high quality brew
or
large quanity of lower quality suds

For christmas, which would your wife appreciate more:
You going to Costco and buying a big box of Hanes grannypanties for her.
Or you going to Victorias Secret and getting a few pairs of something nice.

6 pack of high quality brew
Start with that, and if they prefer PBR, they'll tell you and you bring that next time. My bike shop prefers Bud longnecks, and I learned this after I brought in some Sierra.

just ask,
"what kind of beer do you like?"
6er of heine isn't a bad place to start, they'd probably appreciate a break from pbr/budlite

Go for a high quality dozenpack of whatever the local liquor supermarket's got for sale should be able to do it for 10.99. You'll look like a sport and if you bag the sampler pack there'll be something for everyone. (Caveat stay away from the fucking Sam Adams cranberry lambic which ruins a perfectly good holiday sampler. Mother of God is that shit foul.)

Get a large bottle of Chimay Grand Reserve (the blue label). Best widely-available beer I've ever had. Around 9% alcohol. Costs about 8-9 bucks.

Yep, the boys down at my shop prefer Bud, both liquid and plant form.

If they fuck up the skis, I'd say Baseball Bat Ale.
I have so little faith in shop owners to train staff.

"What do you guy's drink?" is the proper way to end the conversation when you drop your shit off. Early season, whisky is the way to go. Also, make sure you know the name of the person who is hooking you up. That way when you drop it off, you can say "hey, give this to so and so". Also, bring is the booze on the downlow. Don't walk down the stairs with a 12pack and back up the stairs with a pair of skis without a reciept hanging off. As a ski tuner and shop managers, I can't tell you now many people fuck up the hookup system.

Same goes for any decent beer that tastes like fruit or vegetable. The cranberry lambic I have tried, and I spit one sip on a plant - it's almost as bad as Zima, a lot of women like it - but they also like draft Coors Lite/Miller Lite, etc. It might have the lambic process, though. Have you tried any Pumpkin-flavored beers/ales? I felt like I was drinking a punkin pie - trust me, pumpkin doesn't go together with beer in one swallow! All and all, I have to say that any Pumpkin-flavor beer taste a lot worse than Cranberry Lambic.
If you can find it, Full Sail Brewery is employee-owned, and Cooper's Sparkling Ale has no preservatives at all (Cooper's is based in Australia). Foster's is what people on the Aussie Dole drink - to most Aussies, Foster's is not a proper beer, to most Aussies it's a bad as drinking Lite beer...
A Twelver selection pack might be the way to go. Something for everyone.
My pet peeve is Hefe-Weizen - when in the U.S. did it become popular? Almost every Hefe-Weizen tastes like beer mixed with Sprite - aka Zima. When did guys start ordering Hefe-Weizen at a pub? Sissy Boys, Mama's Boys, etc.

This time of year usually sees tasty seasonal releases from some of the larger craft brews. Like Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, and Sam Adams Winter Ale (or is it lager). These are a nice touch as they are only available during a 3 month or so window. Check carefully to make sure they are not fruit flavored. I agree with all of the other comments regarding flavored beers. Beer should be one flavor... beer flavored.

If you gave me Saranac, I would mount your bindings backwards, in different spots and slightly crooked... But I generally don't like Saranac.
You know if that place that starts with a 'P' and ends with an 'urg' has any snow?

At time of year, I also think the holiday brew is the way to go.
A 12 pack of Pyramid Snowcap went over very well last week when a buddy mounted my skis while I waited.
Plus at the 12-pack size the guy can share some with the rest of the crew.

For seasonal beers there really is only one choice, all others pale in comparison:
Sam Smith's Winter Welcome Ale
Otherwise, for less than the price of two four packs of SS'sWWA you can give them TWO 12ers of Hamm's.

Lone Wolf McQuad (sp?) was on the tube last night and he drinks Hamm's :yourock:

I actually prefer Chimay white, but that's like arguing whether Porsche or Ferrari is better. They'll both give you a great ride.
Generally, I ask what they want. People can be really picky when it comes to beer: some hate dark beer, some hate Bud, some hate fancy stuff, etc. If you asked me, I'd request a 4 pack of Guinness. If you asked a buddy of mine, he'd say a 12er of Bud. Asking and getting it right is way better than bringing something they might not like.

gonna be checking it out tomorrow, reports had there being as much as 18" up there before the rain and warm spell over the last two weeks. Supposedly theres 3-4" up high that survived. Due to its aspect and geography that place gets pounded when we do get snow though so the 6-10" that the berkshires is supposed to get could be 9-14" up at the pass. Plus its really clean underneath, so no rocks or tree stumps to hit. Should be a good time. If not its Mt Snow for me:nonono2:

I think Arty has it right, find out what they like when you drop them off or something. The tech will realize that they've got some brews coming their way and take care of you appropriately - with that said if they don't take care of you even with some brews tossed in for them, find a new shop tech.

My preferred shop guy got a 24er of Rockstar as a pre-season gift from me; best $27 I can say I've spent in quite a while...only thing is, it's hard to do that one on the DL, those cans are huge and hard to bring in without making it pretty obvious what's going on...

Seasonal ales go over well with the shop techs I know. Add these to the list.
Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale 9.6%
Deschutes Jubelale 6.7%
Alaska Winter Ale 6.4%
Just don`t bring beforehand, otherwise your twintips may get mounted backwards!

i tried a sixer of 'frambozen' from new belgium the other day, and can report that it was a brown ale with fruit flavor that is actually worth tasting. you wouldn't want to drink from a keg of this stuff, but a bottle or two is tasty. the raspberry taste was present but not overpowering. the beer still tasted like beer, and not a flimsy beer that was pumped up with some fruity syrup. anyhow, if it's more than the basic four ingredients it shouldn't be called beer... aren't there laws about this kind of thing?
frambozen might be a nice sixer to drop on somebody as a gift. something different that they might not otherwise have the chance to taste...
and pow-dog, as for the hefe trend... i know some very large bavarians that would strongly disagree with your assertions regarding their manhood. dunkelweizen isn't pussified in any way, well, other than maybe the sexified glassware in which it's customarily served. sounds like you need to get out and try a wider variety of beers. the best lambics are not the ones coming from sammy adams... but instead from belgium. seek them out.
