How wide a ski for out West?

Wondering how wide to go for a ski that is not dedicated to backcountry off piste only. Must be reasonably enjoyable when forced to ski piste.
Last season, I skied the Big Daddy and although fun for pow, crud and such, it was planky and ugly feeling for piste.

Also, I LIKE face shots and being in the snow and almost felt like I had too much float with the the super fats.

I AT the Atomic REX and like that ski and float for all conditions.
I tele the old world Piste, but am conisdering going fatter this year.

With all the talk here about the 90 or 100plus wide skis, are they used BC only or do you enjoy them on piste as well?

I think the majority of those with 100+ waisted skis are using them as part of a quiver.

My main skis are G4s for everyday and Big Stix 106 for powder days. The 106s are actually okay on groomers and soft stuff, I just don't like them as much for an everyday ski - G4's perform way better in conditions other than powder/tracked up fluff. I'd definitely take the G4 if I could only have one ski.

I've got 70mm, 90mm and 95mm waist choices and have only had the skinny skis out once this year. Agree with Britney, 85-95mm but stay on the stiffer side on the off chance some hard groomers come your way.

I'm in the process of overhauling my quiver. Assuming I don't have to cancel my TR order (come on DB, finish the damn skis already!) those will be my deep days ski. I doubt they'll ever see a piste. I have them in a moderate flex.

I would not want a ski with serious camber or very stiff in deep snow. I have skiied such a ski in the deep and I find it nearly impossible to reverse camber (and, you know, turn) at any speed other than mach seven. Fine on big open bowls, not so fine in the trees.

For general resort skiing, I like something in the 85-90 range, and somewhat stiffer than the TRs. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go after the T@nker for this.

Finally, I race, so I need something fast and agile on the groomers. Those guys tend to be in the mid 60s.

I like XXs for hard snow days though they're clunky in bumps...

But most of the time I ski my Scratch BCs which are 90 at the waist. Unless its frozen or chicken-heads or something, I'm on the scratches.

This is my first quiver year, 190 V-ex (95mm) for everything and 179 Public Enemies (80mm) for jibbing (yeah right), hard snow and skiing with slow people.

But I have not been on the PE's since the V-ex arrived.

I have 70 and 80 mm skis. I want something 95-ish, soft, and short to round things out.

and if you want em short, pistols are good because they don't scale down the waist for shorter sizes, as some others (scratch bc) do. course i figured this one out AFTER i bought my scratch bc's! :mad:

I've found that havin the quiver is the best way to go, don't limit your self to a ski or if you have no choice go mid fat 70 to 85( Axis XP, Mantis 662, 724 PRO. All good skis that will go anywhere.
I Have a 165 slalom ski for the crusin days 116-63-103 and the AK launcher for the deep days and spring crud 118-90-108, I would like to get a pair of Mid twins for an every day kick around ski. I also think that length of ski doesn’t matter as much anymore, short is good. If you go really wide go down one size more than you think you need. These days it's better to error on the side of short. Skis should come between the top of your forehead and your eyebrows.;)

I suppose it depends where out west? For Mammoth this season, I'll be on 190 Explosiv's (95mm waist), and 185 B3's (94mm waist).

Those are too similar of skis IMO. What about 183 Gotama's or 180 V-Pros?

You two pairs of skis that are comprable to these. 190 exposives for every day outside the park and somthing like a stiff park board like the 180 v pro for park and back country booters.

explosives are the sickest for everything outside of the park and if you want to carve the v pro's will do you just fine.

Thats what I rock and they fulfill me for my 100+ days a year

Explosiv's for the super deep and BC and the G4 for everything else. All I ski is Whistler and my quiver is perfect....
