well, we may not be on time for Wine Bar...
LAN has told me since I have two separate tix, I have to go through customs and then recheck in for the SCL-MDZ flight. FUCK. DFW flight lands between 7:44am- but has been late the last few days at 8:07am. MDZ flight now leaves at 8:55. Basically, I could be royally fucked :nonono2:  but I'm going to try and make the 8:55 plane- Girlski knows the deal.

Isn't lph on the same flight? Damn that sucks. I bet they're making you go through customs just so they can collect $100. Or you got a person on the phone who doesn't know what the hell they're talking about...which wouldn't really be a big surprise. 10 different people...10 different stories.

Good luck you guys!!!!

Squirrel is probably on top of this, but:
1. Do not try and bribe cops or customs officials in Chile. They do their jobs honestly and take pride in that fact.

2. Without all the bullshit homeland security rules, check-in (even for international travel) is remarkably efficient in Santiago airport. Arrival>>up the elevator>>through ticket line>>green form and X-ray is only a 30 minute procedure.

Suerte amigos! I'll be drinking with you in spirit

There is one extra bed and floor space in a quite small room in Chalet Payen, Room 449 right nex to the grocery store. If you want to stay there the next few nights and pay us cheap. 200 pesos each for mon, tues, wed nights.

Just knock on the door or email me at kuharicm at u.washington.edu

Rain, rain, go away.

good luck,
I spent two weeks there in early August with my brother-in-law. The worst of the past four years I've spent there. Snow was plentiful. But the mountain adminstration is so incompetent, they closed the whole mountain for 5 days. Whistler would have been at least 80 percent open the whole time under same conditions. Oh, but they left two pomas open which covered about 75 yards up from the base so they could at least say the "mountain is open. What do you mean refund you money for the day?"
With the exception of a rare few, the ski patrol and lift ops are the most incompetent bunch of butthairs I've ever seen running a mountain.
Two days after the final snows of a big storm fell, they decided to open the lifts on the front of the mountain - of course most of the good snow had blown off or had settled to near hardpack by that time it was hardly worth it. Then the next morning after they had let everyone ski the front, a small slide came down near the vulcano lift on the front. Ski patrol freaked out, even though it was a minor slide -- some rubble about foot and a half deep slid down off the steep upper face, and they shut down the mountain again until noon. They were blowing chargest all over the place. This is of course after letting eveyone ski the front the whole day before - with no new snow overnight. Then I asked one patrol why they had only started setting charges at 1030 am. He said they couldn't see very well early in the moring. what a bunch of lazy fucks! Then at noon they open up the front of the mountain again and we get up to the top of vulcano lift and a charge goes off above us with beginners all over the front of the hill. It could have been disaster if it had set something off.
Be careful out there. Don't trust the patrol or the lifties. They are lazyass boobs who have gotten too soft with their job security. Somebody who knows what they are doing needs to buy that mountain up and professionalize its operations. The terrain is the most incredible I've skied on a commercial mountain. The stuff off marte around the back and over the top, not to mention the stuff you can get to by a 45 minute hike. I get the impression its a hobby of the owners who fill the jobs up with their nephews and cousins. After getting frustrated with not getting our money back for the days they closed most of the mountain, we just walked on the the lower lifts without passes for few days with no hitches.

It's now owned by a Malaysian company and apparently they're actively researching redevelopment of the area so hopefully it can reach it's potential.

We met a guy from Whistler who was there pitching for the master plan contract.

I totally agree that step one should be to fire whoever has been in any position of responsibilty under the previous regime. Also like to shoot a few of the guys who ferry around VIP guests in the Porsche Cayennes - saw them almost kill a dozen people with their mad driving steez.

LL has a logistics problem. It's such a bitch to get there. I live in Brazil and I've tried various routes in the past years. The sleeper bus from BA could be good -- it's not expensive and you sleep till you get there the next morning, theoretically -- but its a crap shoot. The year I caught it, it was a nightmare. They showed up at noon, three hours after scheduled.
Plenty of flights to Mendoza from BA or Santiago and love the city but the five hour ride to LL from there is hell.
Flying into Malargue is almost impossible, unless you have your own plane or go with an unnecessary package deal.
I've been going San Rafael from BA then catching a 2.5 hour ride. The least problematic.
But I think that the lack of easy access, which rival resorts like Bariloche and Portio have, is going to put some limits on LL becoming a more successful resort. Maybe that's good? There lifts have trouble dealing with the load when everyone in town decides to ski.

For those of you going or there already, buy the book in the ski shops that has the detailed maps of LL. It has good detail. You'll find some great stuff.
