I think (don't know for sure) South Beach is all ya need to know on MV with surf shops in Oak Bluffs and Vinyard Haven who can tell you what to do.
I know anywhere from Fairhaven, MA to Westport, MA to Little Compton, RI and around the horn to Newport/Bristol RI will be pretty sweet right now. Check in at "Totally Board" in Dartmouth, MA on RT. 6 (off 195 just after Fall River on your way to the cape) and ask the owner Holt where to go/what to do. He's an old school Burton Pro (late 80s-early 90s), and a really nice guy who grew up surfing the 'South Coast' year round.
Hope that helps make some fun.

Check out Aquinnah (old timers know it as Gay Head) Beach. And one of the beaches in Chillmark - Squibnockett (sp?). As I remember - bigger waves than South Beach.

true, but the Taylors and Steenburgers and Dansons of the world are not cool about letting people park at their beaches.

Eff them! Since when were these private beaches?
If they're so hot, then buy a private island somewhere in the Seychelles.
(And even there the gov. will force you to let anyone who can get to shore use the beach)

Northeast (Maryland through Maine) forecast
SHORT RANGE
Much of the Mid Atlantic region will remain small on Tuesday. The best south exposed spots in the northeast will see choppy, short period wind swell then. This is a result of low pressure located to the north and high pressure located offshore the NE coast setting up southerly flow. Check your local summary for more details.
LONG RANGE
It looks like the entire region will be small scale Wednesday through the end of the week as high pressure builds in. The NE region will see small scale knee-thigh high leftovers that fade away during the day on Wednesday. There is some potential in the long range for another round of SSW/SW wind swell for LI north for the weekend. Stay tuned and check the regional summaries to the right for more details in your local area.
As long as there are some waves, I should be all set. Thanks tuffy.

Seven miles long and about 5,000 acres, Naushon is the largest and most unspoiled in the Elizabeth Islands chain, just northwest of Martha's Vineyard and Chappaquiddick. The only year-round settlement in the chain is the town of Gosnold, on the outermost and lone public island, Cuttyhunk.
In its history, Naushon has been owned by only three families; the family of the first governor of Massachusetts colony, the Winthrops, the Bowdoins, and the Forbeses for the most recent 148 years.
The Forbes family maintains about 30 homes on Naushon, and hundreds of Forbeses and their guests vacation there in the summer. The public can boat near it, but not land. Today, a mounted groundskeeper patrols the shores, and politely asks trespassers to leave — though some trespassers are allowed to finish their walk and urged to get permission before landing again.
i just surfed this place........it totally goes off.

Kick ass Kayak destination- you just have to make it through the hole (as in Woods Hole) where 6 different currents running 6-14 knots apiece will try to dash you to bits. If anyone ever needs parking for a paddle trip or even for the MV ferry- drop me a line. I have a house just up the hill from town in Woods Hole.

well there were a few decent days over the course of our two weeks there. funny thing is one day when we decided not to check email, etc. we went to the beach with the extended family. of course, waves are pumpin and our boards and gear are about 15 miles away with no way of getting them.
sigh.
but we'll be back in sept or oct.
