I searched for some answers, didn't fine them all....so:

Bought a linksys wireless router (have a Verizon modem) and a NIC card for the honey's laptop, (mine has a built in modem), and I'm trying to network the 2 wirelessly.

Installed the router installation CD....followed the 'wizard' and done in 2 minutes. The network appears on my laptop when I hit 'view all wireless networks'...but's unsecure-along w/3-others in the neighborhood.

So I now I use the 'network-wizard' that WinXP offers (the wireless network one) and I create a network w/the same name. during the process I select the 'automatically' create a WEP key. finish all that, copy the ASCII number etc. and finish.

The network is still unsecure. Damn! Do I need to do something else w/the router installation? The WINXP wizard kinda sucked.

Also, I installed the NIC card on hers (XP but 200 ed.), and I can't access the network from her computer, even when I typed in the 16digit wep key (like 12 times!!).

Any ideas?
I hate this shit.
Verizon sucks too.
Thanks in advance.

To secure the network you need to go into the config of the router (usually through http://192.168.1.1) and set up encryption on the router itself.

If you're having problems with the WEP key, make a new one.

If the router supports WPA, I would reccomend it- usually a lot easier to deal with than WEP.

Another thing you can do is turn of SSID broadcasting, it wont be technically encrypted but will stop the average wardriver from bothering with the network.

Finally, you can filter by MAC adress (uniqe identifier for every network card) if its just going to be your computers on the LAN.

In addition to encryping, you should change the default password for the router.

FYI, WEP can be cracked in 1/2 an hour or so- If someone really wants in and has any skils, they will get in.

you can also shut off dhcp and only assign as many ip addresses as you will be using.
