Any experience with migrating Gmail contacts to some other email or standalone contacts app? I want something that I can access from my computer and from an Android phone (specifically a Droid Incredible).
I also need to switch my personal email over to some competing email account that can sync well between my computer and an Android phone. (Fortunately my work email accounts are entirely separate, although I've been using Gmail contacts for both personal and business, since Gmail syncs so well with my phone . . . well, until Google locked me out of my account, with no explanation, no timetable for the punishment, no idea as to whether the punishment might be revisited, no appeal process, and no recourse.)

FYI dude..its free mail...maybe either pay for their services or OR read the T.O.S.
not saying you did anything wrong, but man..doesnt seem like you have even waited 24 hours and you're jumpiing ship.
Also i think Gmail will let you export contacts the same way you imported them into a CSV file.

I don't see how I could have provided any of their TOS. Nor do they help to clarify the situation by specifying what Term I violated. If I'm going to be subject to seemingly random 24-hour interruptions of service in the future, then yes, I'm looking for another ship (whether free or paid, just something that works well with a Verizon phone, since Verizon works well around here -- and can't be an iPhone, b/c I want a field-swappable battery).

I've had 3 different gmail accounts since I was invited to use the service back when it was in beta and invite only. I have never had this happen. What have you doing with this account that is making them block you out? They don't just do it for the fuck of it. Think real hard and I'm sure you'll have a clue how you are abusing their service.

I am curious if you have any idea what might have caused this. Do you send out huge volumes of email to multiple lists, or what?

And PS... 2 seconds googling found your answer...
Sign in to Gmail.
Click Contacts along the side of any Gmail page.
From the More actions drop-down menu, select Export....
Choose whether to export all contacts or only one group.
Select the format in which you'd like to export your contacts' information. Please note, some of these formats can lose some contact information.
To transfer contacts between Google accounts, use the Google CSV format. This is the recommended way to back up your Google Contacts.
To transfer contacts to Outlook, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, or various other apps, use the Outlook CSV format.
To transfer contacts to Apple Address Book, use the vCard format.
Click Export.
Choose Save to Disk then click OK.
Select a location to save your file, and click OK

Based on searching around, mainly on Google's own user forums, the lockdown split is roughly between:
-- using some sort of third-party application that Google doesn't like (not me)
-- doing something that a total newbie might think is okay but anyone else would think is just really cumbersome (e.g., sending an email with a zillion pictures attachments to a zillion people, instead of sending an album link to a google group address)
-- totally inexplicable
In my case, I didn't send many emails yesterday since I was away much of the day skiing, and when the lockdown occurred this morning I hadn't the chance yet to do much of anything. (For my avy courses I teach, I use google groups. And for toddler daughter pictures, I send links to Picassa albums.)
I got locked out while sending an email to a few friends about ski plans for tomorrow. At the suggestion of a poster on a Google forum, I looked in my phone's Outbox, and the email was still there (synced from my computer, which is where I was composing the message). Upon deleting it, account access was restored. I still don't know though whether that email triggered the lockout, or whether its suspended status was delaying account restoration.
(And as for exporting contacts, yes, I know how to do that, the question is what alternative would sync well with my phone.)

Account got hacked?
Like one other posted mentioned..I think i have literally 7-8 gmail accounts for various things and never once have i had this happen. I too have been a user since it was invite only beta..
Sorry for your hassles, but i'd wait til the accounts back and see if you can contact the gmail team and ask. First thing i'd do is change the password if.when you get back in.

I changed the password after the account lockdown. Also cleared the cache & deleted cookies.
Contact the Gmail team? The only way to do that is post on their forums and hope they notice, but it's mainly random people answering.

They notice trust me..their search engine crawls that site just like any other..it looks for keywords and notifies a team member. If the post is relevant enough for them to respond they will.

Never had to do this but it appears there is some sort of "contact us" type button somewhere.. check that article.
Good luck.

I have never had any GMail account locked out either, nor had any customers with this issue. But since you have a Droid phone on Verizon there are a few things to investigate. First all Droid OS phones want to have an Email address tied to the phone, and because it is a Google OS- they recommend GMail. It does not have to be GMail, but most create an account and use it at least long enough to set up the phone. Also without knowing the phone and version of Android you are running, Verizon has backup software Backup Assistant or Backup Assistant Plus that you may want to check out. As pointed out once you gain access then you can sign into your google account and export your contacts. As for the email, there are a few ways to get that- any email client can be used to download the messages via POP3 and stored locally. If you want to move all this mail over to another Mail account.
http://www.migrationwiz.com/Public/Default.aspx is an example. You can also run other mail either free accounts like Yahoo, Hotmail on Google Play Apps listings or some higher end paid email software like Touchdown from Nitrodesk which fully supports options like active sync Hosted Exchange like Microsoft Office 365 or other 3rd party hosting that support full active sync to Microsoft Exchange Servers. You can also set up POP3 or IMAP with the email software (but there is a difference between push and pull of email to a mobile device).

I send large files daily, compressed with WinRAR, to coworkers with Gmail. Some files are between 10 and 20MB, and I have never had any issues with Gmail. As far as switching service, I wouldn't use the Yahoo or Hotmail Android Apps. I have known of more people getting those accounts hacked than any other service out there. If you have cable/DSL internet, your provider should give you email accounts "pop mail". Set up one of those accounts and sync that account on your phone as a back up. You would set it up on the phone the same way you would set up Outlook on a PC. This link shows the steps for set up and your provider should list the servers on their website... http://kb.mediatemple.net/questions/1831/How+do+I+set+up+email+on+an+Android+phone%3F#gs
