I just finished War by Sebastian Junger...some of the best writing I can remember in a long, long time. Not only is it a phenomenal book, the prose was the first that has really struck me in several, several books. The guy can simply write.

The book is about the battle of the Korengal Valley--the bloodiest battlefield of our Afghan war--and the people and outposts that comprised it. Read it. You'll learn a lot and enjoy the story. It should be required reading for all Americans and if you ever work with vets who suffer from PTSD or any of the other myriad challenges they face, it will paint a real picture for you.

Check out Restrepo, basically Junger and Tim Hetherington (rip killed covering Libya) embedded. Crazy heavy documentary.

Yeah, saw Restrepo and it was an excellent documentary. I tend to err on the side of books. Black Hawk Down was a great movie but the book was truly informative and rich.

I also read the book and watched the documentary. The book was way better IMHO. The movie just couldn't delve deep into the psyche like the book could. Haunting how we can take an 18 year old normal kid and turn him into an adrenaline charged killing machine, we just can't turn him back into a normal 18 year old kid when it's over.
