Skiing large interconnected ski areas. Staying within sight of liftservice.
Short climbs 100 - 150 yards and traverses to get above liftservice and into the unskied.
Wanted a quick in and out setup.
Using alpine boots and Merlins.
Not carrying overnight equipment. Small pack
Staying within ski boundaries (but they are huge). No bc.
Any experience with Trekker's?
Better option?
Not ready to fork out the bricks for Dynafit system or Diamirs this season.
Waiting on the sidelines for NAXo to be proven.
Thakns, LITT
For most stuff like that, i usually dont even bother with skins, just shoulder them and walk. But if there arent boot packs, and its worth the time to rig the skins and trekkers, then it sounds like you are a perfect candidate for trekkers. But for most stuff that short, its easier to just put in a boot pack, especially if you go there frequently.

Thanks. I decided to not purchase anything at the start of the season. I will be looking around and asking questions and reading. Looking for a skirandonnee group, too. LITT
LITT,
Trekkers are a good way to go for what you're up to.
They snap in and out of your bindings very easily once set up and give that free heel to make traverses and very shallow climbs much less work than bootpacking.
For steeper climbs, climbing skins make it possible, but sounds like that's more than you are after.
Be aware that trekkers can't be used as downhill telemark bindings, and they ain't featherlight.
Keep an eye out in both backcountry & gear sales pages. I just saw a set go for $100 last week.
Here's a link to a set of trekkers & skins for sale:

Thanks for the advice. Got there too late. Trekkers taken.
I plan to stay on the sidelines in Dec/Jan regarding skins and bindings and see what is being used. I may save my money and get a top end ski randonne binding/boot combo in the Spring.
Gear is way overpriced here (CH) compared to states (i.e. REI). And, with the beginning of the season, the ski/board shops are milking it for all they can.

How come you are selling?
Got a better rig?
What did you think of them?
Pain-in-the-ass? Like sliced white bread? or, Easier to shoulder the skis and hike it?
Used how many times?
I am in Switzerland, shipping may kill the deal. You in the states?

LITT - I'm in the UK so shipping shouldn't be too terrifying. The Trekkers have been used twice by the guy I bought them off but I don't think I'll get round to using them that much...

What are the down sides of trekkers. I want to be able to skin up to places to get deep stashes and good snow but not have my bindings explode when charging down or landing switch so dukes are out really. I hear people bitching about them, but there reason is generally "they suck". Is performance that bad and there just annoying to set up or is there more to it?

It's annoying to set up and skinning up on harder snow sucks too. But if the snow is soft and it's only short skin up, then they're just fine. I do know plenty of people who does also long tours on trekkers and done some pretty long tours my self too.

Trekkers are fine for the short stuff, the take a bit to get used to when on steep switchbacks. Good for sled skiing. Almost impossible to use when there is a bit of fresh on hardpack/ice.
I have used them for a 6 hour climb before, not recommended for something that long.

Surely, you jest. Always nice to revive a 6 year old thread, but whoever told you charging down or landing switch is going to make dukes explode is a little off base. Could you make Dukes explode, probably, are there burlier non a/t bindings, sure, but the likelihood of you needing anything burlier, or exploding dukes, from my experience, and from what I read, is unlikely, maybe some bent parts, but Dukes are a pretty bomber downhill binding. I have never hesitated to drop anything with them. I don't go 30 feet +like some of the nuts on here, but up to 20-25, haven't had an issue

^ i was talking about the switch landing more than anything which, correct me if i'm wrong where most breaks occur?

I think Dukes would be just fine.

Well, Dukes do break. People who says Dukes don't break, don't know shit about them. Even though it's burliest binding with tour option, it still has way too many moving parts to compete with 916 or fks bindings, or any race binding. If you make just short skins up, then normal binding + trekkers are way to go. For longer tours, just get some other skis and dukes(or dynafits, as everyone will say...).

Oh, the humor of a 6 year old post. At least Trekkers won't mess up your pretty hair like a heli will.

Since this post, Naxos have come & gone. Trekkers remain! Some irony, that.
